  Notes	1881 census: James, 22, was an AB on HMS Penguin, at sea in the Pacific. 1891 census: at 15 Robinson Place, St Paul Deptford, London, James (33, mariner), Mary Ann (23) and Frederick Henry (1). No trace of James's marriage. From the birth index entries for her children, it appears that Mary Ann's maiden name was STRATTON. July 1894: a sailor at 21 Cranswick Road. September 1896: a mariner at 21 Cranswick Road. When daughter Elizabeth was baptised in 1899, James & Mary Ann's address was 21 Cranswick Road and his occupation, able seaman. In October 1900 James was a mariner of 119 Albion Street, Rotherhithe. 1901 census: at 119 Albion Street, Rotherhithe, London, James (43, mariner), Mary Ann (33), Lillian (6), James (4), Elizabeth (2) and Jessie (6 months). James was said to have been born in Deptford, not South Shields as stated on earlier censuses. 1911 census: at 37 Hughes Fields, Deptford, London (3(?) rooms), James (head, 53, married, labourer in electricity industry, born South Shields), Mary Ann (wife, 42, married 23 years, 10 children *, 7 living 3 died, born Deptford), James (son, 14, [occupation unreadable], born Rotherhithe), Lizzie (daughter, 12, school, born Rotherhithe), Jissie (daughter, 11, school, born Rotherhithe), John (son, 8, school, born Rotherhithe), Annie (daughter, 6, school, born Deptford) and 'Federick' (son, 4, school, born Deptford). Form signed Mr James Minter. * there are two children not accounted for. 1921 census: at 37 Hughes Fields, Deptford, London (all MINTER), James (head, 62y 3m, widowed, born [South] Shields, fitters mate, London LELC, stowage, Deptford), John (son, 18y 8m, born Rotherhithe, butcher's assistant at 42 High Street, Deptford), Fred (son, 14y 5m, born Deptford, whole time school), Lizzie (daughter, 22y 2m, single, born Rotherhithe, fancy box maker at 25 Almond Road, Bermondsey), Jessie (daughter, 20y 8m, single, born Rotherhithe, house keeper at home) and Annie (daughter, 16y 3m, born Deptford, chocolate c--- at Mazawattee, New Cross).
