Notes	Listed in Post Office Directory, 1880 as Walter John Minter & Co, music seller, 136 Chobham Road, New Town, Stratford. The London Gazette of 12 September 1890 reports that Walter was adjudged bankrupt on 10 September 1890. He was trading as W J Minter & Co. His address was 8, Elm-road, Romford-road, Forest Gate, lately residing at 24, Margery Park-road, Forest Gate, and lately trading at 75, Leytonstone-road, Stratford, Essex, and 76, Broadway, Stratford, Essex and described as Out of business, lately Music Seller and Musical Instrument Dealer. The London Gazette of 23 September 1890 reported that the First meeting and the Public Examination were fixed for 2 October and 23 October respectively. The London Gazette of 21 November 1890 reported that an application for debtor's discharge was fixed for hearing on 19 December 1890. On 16 Jan 1891 the London Gazette reported that an application for release from bankruptcy was heard with the result that 'Discharge suspended for one year. Bankrupt to be discharged as from 19th December, 1891'. An absolute discharge was refused on the grounds that 'Bankrupt had continued to trade after knowing himself to be insolvent'. Referring back to the 1890 bankruptcy, the London Gazette of 8 November 1892 gives notice of release of trustees. Listed in Kelly's Directory for Essex, Court Section, 1890 as William (sic) John Minter, 24 Margery Park Road, Upton. 1891 census: at 8 Elm Road, West Ham, Walter John (30, professor of music), Ellen Sophia (31), Arthur B H (5), Sophie E (2) and George A (11 months). Listed in Post Office Directory, 1894 as Walter James Minter, 8 Elm Road, Stratford, London E. From Graham Minter's Minter Story, June 2012: "In 1895, Walter John took out a patent in several countries for a pocket-knife. The patent stated that "the object of this invention is to provide pocket-knives and such like folding instruments with means whereby the blade or blades or the implements thereof can be quickly and easily opened and without requiring to touch the blade or blades or implements with the fingers or finger and thumb"." Form signed W J Minter. 1921 census: at 26 Earlham Grove, West Ham, London (all MINTER), Walter John (head, 61, married, born West Ham, experimental engoneer, inventor & patentee, own account at home,), Ellen Sophia (wife, 61y 11m, born Stepney), Stuart John (son, 29y 7m, single, born West Ham, draughtsman and furniture designer, own account, no fixed place of work) and Bernard Leslie (son, 23y 3m, single, born West Ham, clerk, Inland Revenue Claims Branch, 86 Strand, London WC). September 2013: email from Roger Cedric Willee, great grandson. He writes: "My tie to the Minters is thru' my Mother Kathleen Anne Willee nee Minter Her Father Was Arthur Beaufoi Hewitt Minter a Sapper In the Royal Engineers no10099 whom died in the Dardenelles 22 12 1918. His wife Kathleen Annie Minter nee Caron died the following year 1919. Professor Walter John Minter was my Great grand father. Ellen Sophie Minter was my mothers Aunt and they were very close and both became nursing Sisters I have pictures of many maternal family members and also some of Walter's music and a poem." June 2015: email: "Hello, While doing research regarding a piano we have in our museum collection, I came across your site and found material on Walter John Minter. The piano we have is marked: W.J. Minter and Co. Whitehall, Maryland Point, London E. We were trying to determine its age and thanks to your site, we can date it between 1880-1890. It was purchased by a woman in our region (Frelighsburg, Quebec, Canada) in 1907 and was donated to our collection recently. Thank you! The label attached to a piano made by W J Minter & Co, probably between 1880 and 1890. The piano was purchased by a woman in the region of Frelighsburg, Quebec, Canada in 1907 and was donated recently to the Musee Missisquoi, 2 River Stanbridge East, Quebec.
