    Notes
    • 1881 census: at Norton (Wall End Coast Guard Station), Selsey, Sussex) (both MAY), Thomas (head, 29, coast Guard, born Hamble, Hants) and Mary A (wife, 25, born Southampton, Hants). Also Charles MOREY (brother in law, 14, mariner, born Hamble, Hants).

1891 census: at No. 2 Battery, Worth, Kent (all MAY), Thomas (head, 40, coast Guard, born Hamble, Hants), Mary A (wife, 35, born Southampton, Hants), Elizabeth M (daughter, 9, scholar, born Selsey, Sussex), Alice L (daughter, 7, born Hamble, Hants) and Eva W (daughter, 7 months, born Worth, Kent).

It appears that Thomas died on 20 January 1892 at the Coast Guard Staion, Ringwould, Kent. He was 40: the cause of death was influenza and pneumonia. His funeral was reported in a number of Kent newspapers - the following is from the Deal, Walmer, and Sandwich Mercury, Saturday, January 30, 1892 (at finfmypast.co.uk):
"FUNERAL OF A COASTGUARD. - On Monday afternoon the funeral of the late Thomas May, a coastguardsman at Kingsdown Staion, who died after only a few days' illness, took place at the Kingsdown burial ground. The coffin, which was covered by the Union Jack, was borne to the grave on the shoulders of his comrades, a detachment of whom came from all the stations in the Deal division, extending from No. 2 Battery to Cornhill. The funeral service was conducted by the Rev. Canon Nisbet, in the absence, through sickness, of the Rev. E Badger, and a firing party of twelve coastguardsmen fired three volleys over the grave. The full band of the R.M. Depot was also in attendance."
