| Notes |
- 1861 census: at 23 St George's Terrace, St Mary Bredin Canterbury William Minter CLARIS (32, draper), Anne (sic) Catherine CLARIS (32) and George Martin CLARIS *(son, 5, born Canterbury).
1871 census at 1-2 Mercery Lane, St Andrew Canterbury, William M CLARIS (42, draper &c (master), Jane C CLARIS (42), George M CLARIS (11, scholar) and Sarah J CLARIS (7).
* George Martin Claris is a mystery - the most likely explanation is that his age should have been shown as 5 months, not 5 years. In other words he was the same person as the George M Claris who appeared in 1861.
But the name is also puzzling: George appears in the birth registration index as George Mark Claris. He appears in later censuses as just George M Claris. On the assumption that he was named after his mother, George Martin Claris is used here. This is justified further by George's death appearing in the death index as George Martin Minter.
