| Notes |
- National School Admission Registers & Log-books 1870-1914 at findmypast.co.uk:
E R Minter, 8, was admitted to the Grocers' Company School, Hackney on 14 Jan 1890 and appears to have stayed there until March 1896. His father was E C Minter, a clerk in the War Office, of 17 Salisbury Rd, Dalston.
1911 census: Ernest was staying with his brother (qv).
His wife Ethel Dora (21, born Barnstaple) and son Denys Biron (3, born Hornsey, London) were staying with Ethel's brother in law Harry Montagne O'Connor and his wife Elsie Ellen at 12 Taunton Park Road, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire (6 rooms).
in 1913 a ship left London for Sydney carrying Ernest Minter (adult), E. Minter (female, no age given) and Denys Biron Minter (5).
The website at proarchives.imagineering.com.au appears to confirm the above (although the age of Ernest and the age and initial of Ernest's wife don't agree): it shows that Ernest (44), "Mrs C (40)" and "Mast Denys" (5) arrived in Australia in September 1913 aboard the 'Demosthenes'.
Another record at the same site has 'Mr E R Minter' (31) and 'Mrs Minter' (26) arriving in Australia in July 1914 on the 'Orsova'.
The Victoria Public Record Office list of Unassisted passengers arriving in Victoria also has:
Mr E R Minter, 36, in November 1917 on the 'Nikko Maru'
Mr E R Minter, 36, in February 1918 on the 'Nikko Maru'
Mr Minter, 39, in December 1920 on the 'Houtman'.
A newspaper cutting from the (New Zealand) Evening Post of 26 May 1915 (at http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz) shows an E R Minter as a passenger on the 'Moana', which called at Wellington en route for San Fancisco from Sydney.
Ancestry.com.au - UK Incoming Passenger Lists, 1878-1960 shows that Ernest R Minter (35, manager), Ethel D Minter (28, housewife) and Denys B Minter (9) arrived at Liverpool on 15 January 1917 aboard the 'St Louis' from New York. Address given was 41 Cecile Pk, Crouch End, London. Country of last permanent residence: Australia. They had traveled First Class.
The same source shows that Mrs Ellen (sic) Dora (30, home duties) and Master Denys B Minter (11, school boy) arrived at London via the Cape from Melbourne on 15 October 1920 on the 'Commonwealth'. Both showed Australia as country of last permanent residence.
1921 census: see Ethel Dora's Notes re herself and her son.
Ernest Minter, 40, an agent of 4 Cecile Park, Crouch End, London, arrived in London from Melbourne on 26 July 1921 aboard the SS Berrima.
In 1924, an E Reginald Minter, 43, departed from London for Sydney, Australia. He arrived on the 'Port Darwin' at Hull on 2 November 1924 as Ernest Reginald Minter. He had travelled First Class and gave his address as c/o Commonwealth & Dominion Line Ltd, London (the owners of the Port Darwin) and his occupation as 'Manufacturers'
It's not entirely clear what then happened but it looks as though Ernest's wife and son came back to England *: a Denys B Minter married in 1932 at Finsbury and the death of an Ethel D Minter was registered at age 58 in 1946 in Brighton. If Ernest came back, his death registration hasn't been found. Later note (August 2010): it would appear that Ernest died in Australia - on 30 April 1928 the following announcement appeared in the Sydney Morning Herald:
'The relatives and friends of the late Mr Ernest Reginald Minter are kindly invited to attend his funeral... this Monday [30 April 1928]...'
* this is confirmed: Mrs Ellen (sic) Dora Minter, 30, occupation home duties, and Master Denys B Minter, 11, school boy, arrived in London about 15 October on the 'Commonwealth', having embarked at Melbourne.
Denys B Minter and his family are thought to have emigrated - see his Notes.
