Eggleton Shumate, who for 101 years enjoyed excellent health and on August 27 this year was a guest at a family reunion held near Ridgeway, in her honor, died Tuesday night following about two weeks in disparities. She outlived her husband Tolliver Shumate and two brothers [sic], George and Armistead Shumate, by three score and ten years, who were killed at the Battle of Seven Pines near Richmond . . . She lived with her son John Soward Shumate until his death 25 years ago. For the past 12 years she lived with a daughter, Mrs. George A. Pace near Ridgeway. Another daughter, Mrs. Emily Carter, resides at Ironto, Montgomery County . . . The deceased far outlived a sister and 4 brothers, Mrs. Sallie Eggleston who died about 10 years ago, John and Newsome Eggleston and two others, Armstead and George Eggleston killed in the Civil War. John and Newsom also served in the Confederate forces, but they returned home following the conflict. Some of the surviving relatives include Mesdames George R. Minter and Johnnie Winn of this city, and Mrs. Bettie Shumate of Spray, N. C., nieces and daughters of John Eggleston and Mrs. Joe H. Goode of Bassett, daughter of Armistead Eggleston. She was an aunt of Wesley and Clark Shumate by marriage as well as their second cousin by blood relationship. Funeral services were from the late home near Ridgeway, Friday.
