  Notes	Thanks to James Earley for the following: The Belfast News-Letter of Tuesday April 17 1866 carried a report under the heading "Extraordinary Case of Breach of Promise". The case of Minter v. Reynolds was tried at the Sheriff's Court, Red Lion Square. It emerged that the defendant met Elizabeth and later moved in to her mother's house. He proposed to Elizabeth and the wedding was fixed for February 7. Early that day the defendant "sneaked out of the house ... and on that very morning he was married at St Pancras Church to a person named Ellen Smith* ... the bait was that the lady ... was possessed of £2,000." After witnesses had given evidence the jury assessed the damages at £100. * freebmd has a marriage in Q1 1866 between Cornelius Reynolds and Ellen Smith.
