Sallye Childress Taylor, 88, of 208 Primrose Drive, Blacksburg, Va. and formerly of Martinsville, Va., died Tuesday, August 10, 2010. She was born on January 27, 1922, in Danville, Va. to the late Thomas Johnson Childress and Ruth Minter Childress. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, John Fleming Taylor. Mrs. Taylor received a Bachelor of Science degree from Radford College and a Master of Science degree from the University of Virginia. She was a high school science teacher for 43 years. She began teaching in 1941 in Patrick County, Va. and taught 30 years in Henry County, at Fieldale High School, John D. Bassett High School and Fieldale-Collinsville High School.
Mrs. Taylor was active in the work of the First United Methodist Church of Martinsville, Va. and Blacksburg United Methodist Church, Blacksburg, Va. She was a former treasurer of the Henry County Education Association, a former member of the board of directors of the Southern Area Agency on Aging, a former member and former president of the Martinsville Chapter of the Altrusa Club and an avid bridge player and reader to preschool children.
Surviving are her daughter, Reba Taylor, of Blacksburg, Va.; sons, John Fleming Taylor Jr. (Jeff) ,of Lynchburg, Va. and James William Taylor (Jim), of Chesterfield, Mo.; brother, Thomas Johnson Childress Jr., of Martinsville, Va.; grandchildren, Season Taylor, Will Taylor, Matthew Taylor, Fleming Taylor, Kathryn Taylor, Taylor Phelps and Kendall Phelps; three great-grandchildren and special friends, Nancy Hall, James Hubbard, John and Nancy Ullman and Esther and Eric Hallerman.
The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, August 14, 2010, at Norris Funeral Services Martinsville Chapel with the Reverend Reggie Tuck officiating. Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery, Martinsville, Va. The family will receive friends on Friday evening, from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to the Blacksburg United Methodist Church, P. O. Box 931, Blacksburg, Va. 24063 or to the First United Methodist Church, 146 East Main Street, Martinsville, Va. 24112.
