      Eugene Jack Griffiths, of St. Simons Island, died at home on Tuesday, April 22, after living with lung cancer for five years. It was his 84th birthday. He was born in Chicago, IL, but reared in Pensacola, FL. He was an Eagle Scout and graduated from Pensacola High School in 1941. He graduated as a mechanical engineer from Alabama Polytechnic Institute (now Auburn University) in November, 1944. While at Auburn, he was advertising manager and then business manager of "The Plainsman" campus newspaper. He is a member of Pi Kappa Alpha social fraternity, plus Omicron Delta Kappa and Alpha Phi Omega scholastic honorary fraternities. He was active on many boards and in many organizations on campus, and as a result, he was listed in the national "Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities".

      Immediately after graduating from Auburn, he went into the US Army. After basic training, he entered Officer Candidate School at Ft. Benning, GA and graduated as a 2nd lieutenant in the infantry; however, his commission was changed to the Corps of Engineers. During WWII, he served as a 1st lieutenant in the Amphibious Engineers of the US Army in the Pacific Theater.

      He married Jean Minter of Elberton, GA on August 4, 1951, and had two children, Mary Minter Griffiths and Thomas Eugene Griffiths. He was an executive in the commercial property and casualty insurance. He retired in 1981, moving from Atlanta to St. Simons Island. Jean passed away on January 27, 1997 and is buried in the Garden of Gethsemane, Oglethorpe Memorial Gardens on St. Simons Island.

      He was a member of the St. Simons Island Rotary Club and a founder of the Attitude Adjustment Group; the Coastal Georgia Historical Society; Auburn Alumni Association and the Golden Isles Auburn Club. He was a life member of the Honorable Order of Blue Goose International, a former member of American Legion Post No. 134 in Atlanta, GA; the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and the National Eagle Scout Association.

      Survivors are his daughter, Mary Griffiths, St. Simons Island, son Tom Griffiths and his wife Marilyn Winters Griffiths of Brunswick, numerous nephews and nieces and his dearest friend and helpmate, Mrs. Madge C. DeMay of St. Simons Island. He was a Presbyterian.
