Rudolph V. Steagall, retired City Sheriffs Department Captain with 27 years service, died Sunday, June 3, 2001, at the Blue Ridge Rehab Center. He was 78.
Prior to going to the rehab center, he resided with his wife of 54 years, Lois Carnell Donavant Steagall, at 916 Chatham Heights, Martinsville.
He served in the Pacific Theatre with the Army during World War II; was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #4637 and American Legion Pannill Post #42 in Martinsville; was a member of the Woodmen of the World and Dyers Store Ruritan Club and a former member of the Lions Club.
He also, was a member, and had served as a deacon and Sunday School teacher at Chatham Heights Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Lois Anne S. Howdock of McLeansville, N.C.; and one granddaughter.
The family will receive friends at McKee-Stone Funeral Services from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, and other times at the home on Chatham Heights.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Chatham Heights Baptist Church with Dr. Michael Hatfield officiating. Burial will follow in Roselawn Burial Park with military rites conducted by the Martinsville/Henry County Veterans Honor Guard.

The funeral for Rudolph V. "Rudy" Steagall, 78, of 916 Chatham Heights, Martinsville, who died June 3, 2001, was held Thursday at Chatham Heights Baptist Church. Dr. Michael Hatfield and the Martinsville City Sheriff's Department Honor Guard officiated.
Burial with military rites and a flag presentation by Harrison Donovant of the Martinsville-Henry County Veterans Honor Guard followed in Roselawn Burial Park.
Pallbearers were Paul Steagall, Jim Edward Steagall, Dennis Gregory, Steve Draper, Roy Prillaman, Jewel Hagwood, Bart Hampton, Eugene Wagoner and Sammy Wright.
Arrangements were handled by McKee-Stone Funeral Services.
