    Notes
    • Millard's birth certificate (at ancestry.com) appears to show his name as 'Phil Mark', parents James & Ruba. I suppose 'Phil Mark' sounds a bit like Filmore.

      Buried April 05, 2003.

MINTER, MILLARD FILMORE Longtime Garland resident and member of a Dallas County pioneer family, Millard Filmore Minter died March 31, 2003. He is survived by two brothers, Charles and Ralph Minter; by his daughter Jessie Bernice Minter, 2 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren; 11 beloved nieces and nephews, many grand nieces and nephews and his dear friend, Dorothy Houston and her family. Filmore was born in San Antonio, Texas on January 1, 1918 to Ruby Sapp Minter and James Minter. He was the second of five sons born to the couple. Later he moved with his family to Dallas where his paternal grandparents, a settler family of Dallas County, lived. After Filmore Minter married his beloved wife, Geneva Mae Catherine White, they moved to Garland in the early 1940's. Their only child, Jessie Bernice Minter was born in 1942. Filmore worked as a tool and die maker for Consolidated, Engineering Laboratories, Luscombe, LTV, and E-Systems where he retired. After he retired, he obtained his real estate agent license and, later, his brokers' license. He continued to educate himself with regard to real estate and taxes throughout the remainder of his life. His father died during the Great Depression. At which time, he left North Dallas High School at the age of 15 in order to go to work and help support the family. Although it was a struggle, he continued his education at night and became a certified tool and die maker. He was actively sought after by the defense industry for his skills. In all the years that he worked, he was never laid off. He had a strong work ethic and did only the very best work in anything he did. He was an avid reader. He believed in America and democracy. He kept himself informed, and took initiative to know how all his representatives had voted on any issue on a given day. He made the effort to meet and know each of his local representatives and they respected him. He voted and he helped get the vote out. His citizenship was irreproachable. Filmore had a sharp wit and delightful sense of humor, and he loved the outdoors and spent a great deal of his time there. A most respected sportsman, he spent his happiest moments hunting and fishing and finding ways to do it better. His bird dog. Specks, was one of his favorite memories. He shared his love of nature with his daughter and his grandchildren. He always said: "You could see what God was like in nature." He worked at all levels to preserve wildlife and wild places for posterity. A man of passion for good, Filmore Minter was a man of accountability. He took responsibility for all his actions. He was forgiving and the first to initiate reconciliation. His word and his handshake were honored. His integrity was written on his heart, He needed no laws to remind him of how to live; he lived as his heart bid him regardless of what others said. He especially loved and cherished, the children in his life, he remembered all birthdays and be made sure he attended their important events and activities. Those who knew or met him would say he was handsome, a sharp dresser, knowledgeable, diplomatic, and fun loving. His family and friends knew him as the role model of being American, Christian, a brother, a father, a grandfather, great-grandfather, neighbor and friend. We are all blessed for having known him. We love and miss him. Graveside services will be held Saturday, April 5, 2003 4:30 p.m. at Restland Memorial Park. A Memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Sunday, April 6, 2003 in Williams Chapel. Family will receive friends Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Williams Funeral Directors.
