Civil War - CSA
Rufus James Murphy was the son of Amzi D. and Martha Mayfield Murphy. Born and reared in home of his father on Wolf Road (at intersection with Buck Egger Road), where the old Murphy house still stands (1997). Trained in medicine at Tulane Medical School in New Orleans. Enlisted 6 May 1863 in Co. K of 14th Miss. Vols. where he served as assistant surgeon during the Civil War. After the war, he lived a number of years in the Shannon area of Lee County. He returned to Lowndes County around 1880 where he served as a family doctor in Caledonia for many years. He married Mary E. Gidden December 19, 1866, and Nancy E. Minter , daughter of Thomas J. and Susanna (Egger) Minter, May 5, 1897.
