      - William (18, farmer, born Virginia)

      - John E Minter as the owner of 1 slave, a 7 year-old female
      - William P MInter as the owner of 6 slaves, a 27 year-old female, a 25 year-old female, a 16 year-old male, a 10 year-old female, a 2 year-old female and a 1 year-old male.

      1860 United States Federal Census (on 5 July 1860): in Owsley County, Kentucky, Boonville Post Office (all MINTER), John E (38, farmer, born Virginia), Elizabeth (32, born Tennessee), Charles H (16, farmer, born Virginia), James S (12, born Virginia), William A (10, born Virginia), Florence E (8, born Virginia), Virginia L (6, born Virginia) and Henrietta (3, born Kentucky). Also Sarah MINTER (21, domst g, born Virginia) and Mary MINTER (54, widow, seamstress, born North Carolina).
      The last-named was almost certainly John's mother. The identity of Sarah MINTER isn't known but was possibly John's sister.
      The 1860 U.S. Federal Census - Slave Schedules for Owsley County show John E MINTER as the owner of 2 slaves, a 15 year-old female and a 2 year-old male.

      1870 United States Federal Census (on 29 July 1860): in Boonville, Owsley County, Kentucky (all MINTER), John E (48, farmer, born Virginia), Sarah E (41, keeping house, born Virginia), William A (19, farm labor, born Virginia), Florence E (17, born Virginia), Virginia (16, born Virginia) and Henrietta (13, born Kentucky).
      Several other groups of Minters appear at the same location:
      - Charles H (24, farm labor, born Virginia) and Mary J (16, house keeper, born Kentucky) [this was John's son and his wife].
      - James S (22, farm labor, born Virginia) and Lucy J (19, house keeper, born Kentucky)
      - Polly A (66, born North Carolina) and Sarah (27, born Virginia).
      - Jack (12, farm labor, born Kentucky) and Thomas (8, born Kentucky). Both these children were black.
      Then there is a separtate entry for two more groups of Minters, all black, all apparently at the same property:
      - Samuel (21, farmer, born Virginia), Esther (23, keeping house, born Mississippi), Tabitha (7, born Mississippi), Eliza (5, born Mississippi) and Malon (3 months, born Kentucky)
      - Tamar (50, female, house keeper, born Virginia), Rose A (17, born Virginia), Mary (14, born Virginia), Francis C (male, form labor, born Kentucky) and James G (8, born Kentucky).
      NB: all the above-mentioned black people were named MINTER.

      John's death is recorded in the return of persons who died dring the year ending 31 May 1880 (ie before the 1880 census). He was said to be 59, a farmer, died in January 1880 of pneumonia, having lived in Owsley County for 25 years.
