    • A labourer of Margate in 1834 and of St Mildreds, Canterbury in 1835.

      1841 census (indexed as MINTEN by ancestry.com): in New Street, St Mary Dover, Edward (30, plasterer), Jane (25) and Harriet (2).

      A plasterer of Dover in 1843. A plasterer of Ramsgate in 1848.

      1851 census: at New Zealand, Folkestone, Edward A (39, plasterer), Jane (39), John (20, labourer), Mary A (18), Edward (15), Caroline (7), Robert (5) and George (2). The last 3 were scholars.

      1861 census: Edward (49, plasterer) and Jane (49) were living in Hackney with 5 of their children, Mary (26) - described as married, a sawyer's wife (why was she counted as Mary Minter?), Robert (16), George (14), Jane (8) and William (7). There is another census entry for Minter in Hackney which is difficult to understand:
      C Minter, servant, 17, born Dover
      Jane Minter, unmarried, nurse, 45, born Margate
      This pair looks suspiciously like Edward's wife and daughter. The birth of only one Caroline Minter was registered in 1843 - in Dover - and Caroline was not living with her father when the census was taken, and there is no other trace of her. But this Jane gave her age as 45 and would have to have been counted twice if she really was Edward's wife.
      October 2009: now discovered that Caroline married in October 1861 in Bethnal Green so had probably moved to London before the 1861 census was taken, with the rest of the family. But it's not clear why her mother was with her, or why they were at a different address in Hackney (6 Forest Place).

      1871 census: Edward (59, plasterer) and Jane (59) were living at 4 Bradford Road, Lewisham, Kent with unmarried sons George (22, plasterer) and William (16, labourer).

      Possibly appeared in the Post Office Directory for Kent, 1878 as Edward Minter, plasterer, 82 Malham Road, Forest Hill.

      1881 census: Edward (68, no occupation, described as 'afflicted') and Jane (68) were living by themselves at 1 Apley Road, Penge. Edward died of cancer in 1882 at that address.

      1891 census: now a widow aged 77, Jane lived at 27 Arthur Road, Beckenham, Surrey as a companion to Elizabeth BLAKE (widow, 63(?), laundress, born Stratford E, London).
