Notes |
- 1861 census: aged 16, William a servant (carter) on a farm in Staple, Kent
1871 census: William aged 25, a gardener, living with wife Jane (27) and sons Albert (4), Arthur (2 months) in Durlock, Ash, Kent and a visitor, Ellen E LAWRENCE (13, scholar, born Sandwich, Kent). Their daughter Edith (2, born Durlock Ash) was staying with her grandparents Daniel (64, ag. lab.) and Sarah (53) LAWRENCE at Cottage Osier Gardens, Worth.
The identity of Ellen E LAWRENCE hasn't been established, possibly a relative of William's wife.
William emigrated to Canada and went to the USA about 1872 where he was a market gardener. William's grandson Lloyd Minter added more detail in a letter written to Margaret Young in the 1980s:
".. grandfather Minter was a gardener on big estates for rich people. He once went into farming vegetables (a 'market gardener' as he was called in England) in Charleston, South Carlina, with partners, to raise fresh vegs in the winter to ship north by iced box cars (a new invention!) but was wiped out by a tidal wave which wiped out the operation on St Johns Island."
William was naturalised in Philadelphia. US censuses provide the following information about William in America:
1880: in Cheltenham, Montgomery, Pennsylvania, William (34, born England, farm laborer), Fannie E (sic) (25, born New Jersey, keeping house), Charles (3, born Pennsylvania), Flora (2, born Pennsylvania) and William (10 months, born Pennsylvania).
1900: in Rockledge borough, Montgomery, Pennsylvania, William (43, garden laborer), Fannie (wife, 44, married 26 years, 9 children, 8 living, born New Jersey), Charles (son, born Aug 1875, age 24, born Pennsylvania, garden laborer), William (son, born Oct 1879, age 20, born Pennsylvania, laborer dry goods store), Albert (son, born Jan 1881, age 19, born Pennsylvania, apprentice stock worker(?)), George (son, born Jun 1883, age 16, born Maryland, driver tea(?) wagon), Martha (daughter, born Jun 1886, age 13, born Pennsylvania, at school), Mayble (sic), daughter, born sep 1888, age 11, born Pennsylvania, at school), and Evaline (daughter, born Nov 1893, age 7, born South Carolina, at school).
1910: Martha (22, bookkeeper, coal office), Mabel (20, dressmaker) and Evelyn (17, office work) were staying with their married sister Flora M HAMMER in District 1104, Philadelphia Ward 43, PA.
Meanwhile, in England:
1881 census: Jane, aged 36, married, acting as housekeeper to John HOOKER, 86, widower, market gardener at Durlock Cottages, Ash. Sons Albert H. 14 and Arthur W. 10 with her. Daughter Edith (11, scholar) was staying with her uncle and aunt Thomas and Charlotte LAWRENCE in West Side, St Mary, Deal.
William's grandson Alfred Minter, in a letter written to Cliff Minter in 1977, said that "after 1871 William went to USA and married his cousin SPRATT (did they elope?!) but she died in childbirth in upper New York state. He married Frances COX in 1876 and the American family stems from this marriage." Cliff Minter, writing in 2005 adds "It would not surprise me to learn that William (1845-1918) never made a civil registration of his marriage to Jane Lawrence. Hence the reasoning that he was free to leave her for another."
William's grandson Lloyd Minter, in a letter to Margaret Young in the 1980s, said 'My grandfather was William Minter and by all accounts a wominiser'.
1891 census: Jane, head of household, 47, married, a market gardener at Church Lane, Sholden. Children Albert H., 24 bricklayer, Edith E, 22, and Arthur W., farm labourer, still with her.
1901 census: no trace of Jane. Albert and Edith married in the 1890s but no trace of them, or of Arthur, in 1901.
1911 census: in Station Road, Sturry, Canterbury, Kent (6 rooms), Jane (head, 70, widow, 3 children all living, 'at one time farmer but not now', born Sholden near Deal, Kent) and Arthur William (son, 37, single, farmer, born Ash near Sandwich, Kent).
Form signed Arthur W Minter.
