      Dr. Elsie G. Minter, 78, died Sunday, Dec. 14, 2003, at Evergreen Care Center, Baptist Village, in Owasso, Ok.
      A native of Martinsville, she was born May 4, 1925, a daughter of the late Mae Nunn and William Owen Minter. She also was preceded in death by a brother, William Owen Minter Jr.; and a sister, Ruth Minter George.
      In 1946, she received her BA degree from the Westhampton College of the University of Richmond, where she was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Mortarboard. She received an MRE degree from Southern Seminary in Louisville, Ky., and afterwards served for several years as minister of youth at the Virginia Heights Baptist Church of Roanoke and the First Baptist Church of Spartanburg, S.C.
      Turning to a career in teaching, Minter pursued graduate studies at Bryn Mawr College and studied on a Fulbright Scholarship at the University of Paris, France. She earned an MA in French and a Ph.D in Comparative Literature at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she was a Woodrow Wilson Fellow and a Career Teaching Fellow.
      Upon graduation in 1962, she took a position on the faculty at Stetson University, DeLand, Fla., where she served for 30 years as professor and head of the Department of French and director of the Studies Abroad program, working with students in France, Germany and Switzerland. She was listed in The Index of American Scholars and Who's Who Among American Women.
      After retiring, she lived several years in Cleveland, Ga., where she was active in the Kiwanis Club, and most recently in Pendleton, N.C., where she was a member and Sunday School teacher at Roberts Chapel Baptist Church.
      Surviving are one son, William Owen Minter III of Owasso, Ok.; one niece; and two cousins from Martinsville and one from Ridgeway.
      The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Starling Avenue Baptist Church in Martinsville with Dr. Gerald Robinson presiding. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery.
      The family will greet friends at the church for one hour prior to the service Wednesday.
      Memorials may be made to the Cemetery Fund, Roberts Chapel Baptist Church, Pendleton, N.C. 27862.
