- From Trove (http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-page6088248), February 2015:
DEATH OF MR. JAMES PECK. We record with much regret the death of Mr James Peck, of Sale, which took place on the evening of Wednesday the 17th inst., at his residence Sunnyside. The deceased gentleman, who was in his fifty-first year, was a son of the late Robert James Peck, surgeon, of Newmarket, England, where his education commenced, terminating at about the age of fifteen years, at a school in France. He came to this colony a mere lad in the year 1850, with the late Dr. Hedley, with whom he remained at Tarraville for a short period, and then went to the station of his brother-in-law, Mr John King, of the Ridge, to gain colonial experience. He lived at the Ridge for a number of years, and subsequently became superintendent of the station, making himself a general favourite with all who came within the somewhat extensive circle of his acquaintance. In 1866-7 he became a partner with Messrs Pearson and English, the well-known stock and station agents at Sale, the style of the firm then being known as Pearson, English, and Peck. In another year or two there was a further change in the firm, the senior partner, Mr A. L. Pearson, leaving, to enter into a similar business in Melbourne. Mr Peck's genial manners and superior business abilities soon brought a very considerable accession of trade to the reorganised proprietary, and the entire cattle business of the firm was undertaken by him with highly satisfactory results; so that English, Peck, and Co., soon occupied the place of the leading business firm in this portion of Gippsland. Some years ago Mr Peck was severely hurt by an infuriated beast charging him at one of the up-country sale yards, and his constitution, already showing signs of weakness from pulmonary symptoms, said to be hereditary, was now somewhat enfeebled. A few months after this occurrence, with an intention to make a home in the warmer climate of Queensland, he left the firm, and Mr Theo. Little took his place. He returned from Queensland, after a lengthened visit, somewhat recruited, though very little, if at all, improved in health ; but intending to return permanently, he sold his homestead at Bowaret, on the Stratford road, about six months ago, and was preparing to remove with his family to Queensland. His health, however, now rapidly gave way, and his friends could see, spite of all that medical skill could accomplish, that his days on earth were running out apace. The announcement of his death on Wednesday afternoon therefore took no one by surprise, and his sufferings for the past few weeks had been so distressing at times that when the inevitable end came it was felt to be a happy release. He leaves a wife and children all comfortably provided for, and as the genial " Jimmy Peck" his memory will live long in the recollection of those denizens of the New Province who are entitled to be called old Gippslanders. The deceased gentleman never entered public life, though often invited to do so by his fellow townsmen, but he filled with credit and ability many semi-public social positions. All he took in hand he did thoroughly and well, and he achieved a high position in the ranks of trade in this portion of the colony by the sheer force of his own merits. His unflagging zeal and unswerving integrity formed the capital with which he commenced his business career, and had health and strength not failed, his worldly success would have been very much greater. The funeral takes place to-day, and, notwithstanding the somewhat short notice, will doubtless be largely attended.
