| Notes |
- 1861 census: may have been a servant in St Pancras, London, although the census entry is for an Alice, aged 21, born Shoreditch.
The 1871 marriage to John Newcombe is slightly doubtful because in the register Alice's father's name is given as Richard Minter, master mariner (Alice's father was a mariner but called Robert). There are two other reasons for doubt: in censuses from 1881 on, (1) Alice Newcombe gave ages which imply a birth year of 1842 or 1843 and (2) her birthplace was given as Bow (which is near but not the same as Shadwell, where the family lived when she was baptised).
On the other hand, the signature of the Alice Minter who signed the register when she married in 1871 is similar to the signature of the Alice Minter who signed the register as a witness to the marriage of George Minter in 1867.
Finally, (1) there is no other known candidate to the 1871 marriage to John Newcombe, (2) the enhanced version of the BMD index shows MINTER as the mother of John Newcombe's son Albert John and (3) the 1911 census gives Alice's birthplace as Shadwell. Given these three points, there can be no doubt about John and Alice's marriage.
