  Notes	1841 census: in Turnpike House, Gillingham, Kent (home of Barnabas HOWES, cordwainer and family), John BRIDGES (15, shoe---, born in Kent). 1851 census: in Cranbrook, Kent (all BRIDGES), John (head, 26, bootmaker, born Chatham, Kent), Mary (wife, 25, born Chatham, Kent) and Mary (daughter, 1, born Cranbrook, Kent). 1861 census: it's not clear what happened but the following entries appear to refer to this family: (1) at 6 James Street, Gillingham Kent, John BRIDGES (head, widower, 36, agent general, born Chatham, Kent). (2) at 3 Ordnance Terrace, Chatham, Kent, Ann BRIDGES (head, unmarried, 38, boarding house keeper, born Chatham, Kent), Mary A BRIDGES (niece, 11, scholar, born Cranbrook, Kent, Edward B BRIDGES (nephew, 7, scholar, born Chatham, Kent) and Thomas B HOWES (nephew, 13, scholar, born Maidstone). Also two lodgers. A possible explanation for the above is that John and his wife had split up before the 1861 census was taken, and that John was calling himself a widower and Mary Ann was calling herself Ann, an unmarried woman. In any event, John was apparently free to marry again by Q4 1862, when he married Eiza BURDEN. It's possible that Mary Ann's was the death registered in Q3 1862 at Greenwich (1d/390 - a 31 year-old of Albert Street, buried on 23 August 1862). 1871 census: at 29 Church Street, Greenwich West, Kent (all BRIDGES), John (head, married, 46, butcher, born Kent), Eliza (wife, married, 42, born Kent), Mary Anne (daughter, single, 21, assists in business, born Kent), Edward (son, single, 17, assists in business, born Kent), John (son, 7, scholar, born Kent), Eliza (daughter, 5, scholar, born Middlesex), and Sophia (daughter, 3, scholar, born Middlesex). 1881 census: by the time of the 1881 census John was a widower again, Eliza having died in 1876. At 67 Upper North Street, Poplar, London (all BRIDGES), John (widower, 56, eating house proprietor, born Chatham, Kent), Mary Ann (unmarried, 31, born Cranbrook, Kent), Eliza (15, born Bethnal Green, Middlesex) and Sophia (13, scholar, born Bethnal Green, Middlesex). Relationship of the three latter names to head of household not stated. John not found in the 1891 census. His death might have been that registered in Q2 1896 at Greenwich (1d/622) although the age shown on the index record is 69.
