| Notes |
- Margaret was a widow when she married Henry - her maiden name was STAPLETON. According to Geoff Hayes, she was the daughter of James STAPLETON and Mary HORGAN.
The following is based on work done by Geoff Hayes, June 2015:
As was stated on her marriage certificate when she married Henry Smith Minter, Margaret was a widow. She had married George William HAMMOND on 13 August 1873 in North Adelaide. The marriage produced 7 children, the three youngest would have all been minors at the time she wed Henry, so the marriage may have been difficult for him at age 50 ish with a young family:
Bertram James - 8 years.
Gertrude Hilda - 5 years.
Eileen Florence Emma - about 2½ years.
Henry and Margaret lost their child Julia Ann Minter shortly after childbirth in 1893; this being Margaret's 8th child over a span of 20 years. It would be easy to assume there would have been a fair amount of marital pressure on him by now with 3 young children in the household as well as another 3 of marriageable age in the background. Perhaps Margaret Hammond felt she had done her bit at about age 40 years, and apparently Henry still had a roving eye, hence the errant manner of his departure to Perth in November 1896 with Mary Jane Hall.
By this time, two of the Hammond children had married
1. Amelia Matilda on 1 June 1892.
2. George James on 14 October 1895.
Gertrude Hilda did not marry until 1917 at the age of 29 years - she was probably still at home with her mother helping her in the household.
January 2017: email - "My name is Wendy Hammond (Harmer). I am currently researching my family history including Margaret Stapleton / Hammond / Minter who is my GG Grandmother by her marriage to George William Hammond in Adelaide South Australia."
Wendy is seeking information about Margaret Stapleton's parents.
