    Notes
    • Baptised as son of William and Martha Maria Semper.

1841 census (1): in Eldon Square, St Giles, Reading, Berkshire, Edward (40, trunkmaker, not born Berkshire).
1841 census (2): in Cornwell Buildings, Lansdown, Walcot [Bath], Somerset, Sarah (40, grocer), Mary (15), William (7), Ella (4) and Alfred (4). All shown as born in Somerset, although Mary was baptised in London (in Bermondsey St Olave as daughter of Edward & Sarah Semper, Boars Head Court, trunk maker).

Edward is listed in Pigot's Directory of Somerset c. 1844 as:
Semper Edward, shopkeeper, 31 Cornwell buildings, Bath.
His father is in the same directory.

Kath Chaveli has supplied further Directory entries:
1837 Ed Semper trunk maker 6 Chatham Row
1841 Ed Semper 31 Cornwall Buildings, Grocer
      1842 listed as Shopkeeper
1846 address is Bell Inn, 1 Cornwall Buildings (the pub is still there!!)

1851 census: at 3 Holloway, Lyncombe & Widcombe, Somerset, Sarah (head, widow, 50, grocer, born Bath, Somerset), Ella (15, scholar, born Bath, Somerset) and Alfred (13, errand boy, born Bath, Somerset.

1861 census: at 64 Boston Place, Christchurch, St Marylebone, London, Sarah (head, marital status difficult to read but could be 'Mar', 59, grocer, born Bath, Somerset. Another family, the Hannafords, occupied the same address.

The most likely explanation for the absence of Edward from the above 1851 and 1861 censuses is that he left his wife and family and went to live in Manchester with another woman, Mary Ann. It looks as if she was also from Bath but her surname and history haven't been established. It appears that Edward returned to London and died in the St Marylebone Workhouse in 1870.
One strange thing is that, in 1861, Edward's son Alfred referred to his father as a trunk maker - hard to understand unless either (a) the Manchester Edward was a completely different person or (b) some kind of pretence was maintained to hide what had happened.
Mary Ann's death as Mary Ann SEMPER was registered in 1862 at Manchester.

Edward's 1851 and 1861 census appearances are as follows:
1851 census (appears as SANPER): at 38 Coronation St, Manchester St Philip, Edward (head, married, 51, porter, born Gloucester[shire?] and Mary Ann (wife, married, 40, tailor, born Gloucester[shire?]. Birthplaces are both partly obscured on the copy seen in 2019.

1861 census: at 6 Eltoft Street, Manchester St John (both SEMPER) Edward (head, married, 51 [should have said 61], porter, born Bath, Somerset) and Mary A (wife, married, 51, born Bath, Somerset).

Edward's death from apoplexy and paralysis at age 72 is recorded in the Register of deaths in the Workhouse of the parish of St Marylebone (at Ancestry.com. June 2011). A second record shows that he was admitted to the Workhouse on 23 July 1870 and was buried (by a Mr White) on 29 July. He was said to have died in the St Lukes Ward.
