"SGT US ARMY WORLD WAR II
Laredo Times dtd 1/7/99
Hebbronville-- Charles Waugh Hellen Jr., born Nov. 26, 1919 in Laredo, died Tuesday evening, Jan. 5, 1999 at his ranch home near Hebbronville. Mr. Hellen was preceded in death by his parents, Charles W. and Alice F. Hellen, pioneer South Texas ranchers and his older brother, Dana Licoln Hellen. Mr. Hellen, affectionatly known to his friends as Charley or "El Chalito" was a U.S. Army veteran of the European theatre during World War II, serving under General George S. Patton as a motor pool sergeant. He formed life-long friendships with fellow veterans from around the United States, corresponding with them annually for more than 50 years. Charley Hellen was a life long rancher and respected cattleman. Like his brother Dana, he took pride in the fact that they increased the acreage left them by their parents despite adversities of South Texas ranching. Charley Hellen was known for his kindness, good humor and took especially great pride in his friendships and respect for fellow cattlemen and old time "vaqueros."
Charles W. Hellen Jr., like his father, served as director, president, chairman of the board and finally advisory director of the First National Bank of Hebbronville. In addition, he had previously served as director of the Medina Electric Coop., Hebbronville Livestock Auction and took great satisfaction in serving as a charter member and director of the Texas Longhorn Breeders of America Association. He was also a long time member of the Veterans of Foriegn Wars, American Legion, Republican Party, Texas and Southern Cattle Raisers Association, National Cattleman Association, Independent Cattlemens Association and the Jim Hogg County Fair Association, by whom he was honored as "Rancher of the Year" in 1989. He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Willellen, children and grandchildren."
