ORIGINAL CORRESPONDENCE.
THE MAITLAND AND MORPETH VOLUNTEERS.
To the Editors of the Maitland Mercury .
DEAR SIRS-In your issue of this day I am reported to have proposed as a motto for our corps the words " toujours prët," which being interpreted means "always taken." The words I suggested were " Toujours près" (always ready). I don't wish to find much fault with your report, as I hope that as we are "Toujours près" we shall be "Toujours prêt" when wanted,
Yours truly,
ROBT. B. MINTER, M. & M. V. Maitland, Oct. 16, 1860,
[The letter ë appeared in the report in consequence of a typographical error. The word was written " prêt," which is understood to mean "ready." The motto "toujours près" is clearly not Mr. Minter's. It would well suit a rifleman who always shoots near the mark. Mr. Minter wlll also see that he is mis"taken" as to the interpretation of the letters "prët." To borrow from Punch, " Toujours prêt" was right to a t. REPORTER]
