Notes |
- From UK, Calendar of Prisoners, 1868-1929 at ancestry.com:
On 21 October 1893 George Henry Coslett, 26, musician, appeared in court in Westminster and pleaded guilty to stealing, on 22 September 1893, 'a piano and other articles, value £100, the goods of Clara Louise Coslett'. He was bailed for £10 to appear for judgment if called upon.
August 2021: Janet Tidman writes:
"I found newspaper reports from the London Evening Standard about the trial of George Coslett in October 1893. He sounds a thoroughly bad lot! Seems that Clara had spent some of her inheritance from Caroline on furniture which was placed in the 3 rooms they rented at 41 Glengall Road, Kilburn. Later, when she returned to Suffolk to arrange for a gravestone for her mother, George removed all the furniture, sold some items and even some of her clothes. She returned to their rooms to find him gone, as well as everything else apart from a box and some curtains. Sounds like he was probably an alcoholic - he said that 'he had been drinking heavily for some time past. Whatever he earned he spent'. Clara also said that 'she always had to support her husband: he had never given her sufficient to pay the rent.' Poor Clara! I haven't been able to find either Clara or George in the 1901 census, so I don't know if she went back to him (I hope not!) and as you say, in 1911 she was a patient in Portsmouth infirmary. I haven't found out when or where she died."
George Henry probably died in 1910 (although his wife's 1911 census entry - see below - doesn't say 'widow'). The England & Scotland, Select Cemetery Registers, 1800-2016 (at ancestry.com) has an entry:
Coslett George H 42 years, 33 Rushton St, Hoxton. Buried in Chingford Mount Cemetery, London, on Saturday 19 March 1910.
1911 census: Clara COSLETT (41, married 20 years, no children, no occupation, born Westminster, London) was a patient in the Parish of Portsmouth Infirmary, Milton Road, Kingston, Portsmouth.
Clara's death not found.
