Notes	1911 census: the crew list for HMS Squirrel. at Millbray Dock, Plymouth, Devon includes Herbert Minter, 21, single, officer's steward, 2nd class, born Peasenhall, Suffolk. It's possible that one or both of the following records in the National Archives of Australia relates to this person: 1. MINTER Herbert : Service Number - 60078 : Place of Birth - Suffolk England : Place of Enlistment - Sydney NSW : Next of Kin - (Mother) MINTER Ellen 2. MINTER HERBERT : Service Number - N469911 : Date of birth - 29 Apr 1889 : Place of birth - SUFFOLK ENGLAND : Place of enlistment - RANDWICK NSW : Next of Kin - MINTER LEAH [WW2]. Confirmed at www.ww2roll.gov.org - Private in 28 ENG BN V D C P T D. The above seems very likely: a Herbert Minter aged 56 was cremated at the Eastern Suburbs Crematorium on 18 August 1945. His ashes were taken away. It's also evident, from the announcement of Herbert's death in August 1945 in the Sydney Morning Herald, that Herbert married and had a family. The announcement mentions his wife Leah, children Jessie (Mrs Patterson), Tressie, Marjorie (Mrs Francis) and Douglas, son-in-law Clyde and granddaughter Caroline. Of these I've found official records for Marjorie, whose marriage to Clyde Truitt Francis occured in 1944 and for Douglas. Electoral Rolls confirm Herbert's wife was Leah. The NSW record of Leah's death gives her parents' names as Manuel and Annie. Australian Electoral Roll, 1925 for Bulimba, Oxley, Queensland includes at Thorpe Street, Bulimba: Herbert Minter, steward Leah Minter, home duties. Australian Electoral Roll, 1937 for Kurilpa, Griffith, Queensland includes at Montague Road: Herbert Minter, hotel porter Leah Minter, home duties. Australian Electoral Roll, 1943 for Clovelly, Watson, NSW includes at 40 Clifton Road: Herbert Minter, postal employee Leah Minter, home duties Jessie Annie Minter, home duties Tressie May Minter, machinist. Herbert died in 1945: Australian Electoral Rolls, 1949, 1954, 1958 for Clovelly, Kingsford-Smith (Phillip in 1958), NSW include at 40 Clifton Road: Leah Minter, home duties. Australian Electoral Roll, 1963 for Clovelly, Phillip, New South Wales includes at 40 Clifton Road, Randwick: Leah Minter, home duties [son] Douglas Herbert Minter, process worker [son's wife] Patricia Norma Minter, typist .
