| Notes |
- 1921 census: at 36, Baronsmere Road, East Finchley, Finchley, Middlesex (all MINTER), Frederick William (head, 32y 10m, married, born Westminster, London*, automobile engineer on own account at home), Gertrude Mary (wife, 21y 10m, married, born Ramsgate, Kent, home duties) and Dorothy Ellen (daughter, 5 months, born Finchley, Hornsey).
* why Frederick should have said he was born in Westminster is a mystery. Another mystery surrounds his wife: I can find no birth registration in or around 1899 in Kent of a Gertrude Mary Braithwaite. But an Alice Getrude Braithwaite's birth was registered in Q3 1899 at Thanet RD (which covers Ramsgate) and the enhanced BMD index shows no mother's maiden name, suggesting that Alice Gertrude Braithwaite was illegitimate.. I suspect that she and Gertrude Mary Braithwaite were one and the same person.
Without the necessary certificates, Frederick's story is uncertain. The Hendo and Finchley Times of 21 April 1922 (at findmypast.co.uk) reported that Frederick William Minter of Baronsmere Road, East Finchley, appeared at Highgate Court the previous Wednesday in answer to a summons charging him with having deserted his wife, Gertrude Mary Minter. This led to the Bench ordering Frederick to pay Gertrude 30s a week, with custody of their child being given to Frederick, provision being made for Gertrude to see the child.
Papers in the National Archives indicate that Frederick petitioned for divorce in 1923, the respondent being Gertrude Mary Minter and the co-respondents, Rowell Bunard and Claud Winter. But these papers don't say whether the divorce was granted. However, Frederick seems to have married again, in Q3 1924, to Lily Green but she appears to have died quite young in 1936.
Quite mystifyingly, when June A Minter was born in 1930, her mother's maiden name apears in the BMD index as Braithwaite: her birth cerificate would show whether this Braithwaite was in fact Gertrude Mary Braithwaite. If so were she and Frederick William Minter still in a relationship despite his marriage to Lily Green?
I cannot find Gertrude's death or re-marriage or any trace of her in the 1939 Register. Neither can I find Frederick William Minter in the 1939 Register.
I can't find Frederick in the 1939 Register either.
