    Notes
    • It's assumed that the Allen Minter found in the 1901 census on the Isle of Wight is Allan Fenn Minter. The age is not quite right and the birthplace in 1901 was given as Ipswich, but that is where Allan's parents lived in 1901. Also, Allan's brother Arthur Clifton Minter also seems to have made his way to the Isle of Wight - he married there in 1900. Finally, Allen's profession in 1901 was tailor, like his father Clifton and other members of the family.

1901 census: in High Street, Cowes, Isle of Wight, Walter T TOMBLINSON (married [but no sign of wife], 42, licensed victualler, born East Ham, Essex), Ernest W TOMBLINSON (son, 20, traveler, born Leytonstone, Essex), Nellie MINTER* (daughter, married, 18, housekeeper, born Leytonstone, Essex), Annie TOMBLIN [SON, presumably], daughter, 15, born Stratford, Essex), Allen MINTER (boarder, single, 20, tailor, born Ipswich) and Amy MINTER (granddaughter, 6 weeks, born Cowes).
*Nellie Minter was the wife of Allan's brother Arthur Clifton Minter; Amy Minter was their daughter. Nellie's maiden name was TOMBLESON, not TOMBLINSON as appears on the 1901 census.

Allan Fenn Minter hasn't been found in the 1911 census. He may have gone to South Africa: there are two records at the National Archives of South Africa (Pietermaritzburg Archives Repository) which mention Allen Fenn Minter:
      - in 1956, apparently following his death, 'MINTER, ALAN FENN. BORN IN ENGLAND. SSP MINTER, MARGARET ANNIE. DECEASED ESTATE. '
      - in 1974, apparently following his wife Margaret Annie's death, 'MINTER, MARGARET ANNIE. (FORMERLY DANIELSEN, BORN THOMPSON). BORN IN WEST DERBY, ENGLAND. PREDECEASED SPOUSE DANIELSEN, GUSTAV. ESTATE NO. 2991. PREDECEASED SPOUSE MINTER, ALLEN FENN. ESTATE NO. 779/1956. DECEASED ESTATE.'

April 2013: email & phone contact with a descendant, Leon Minter, born Southern Rhodesia (Zimbabwe), now living in Woollongong, Australia.
May 2013: Leon has sent me copies of Alan's birth & marriage certificates plus his army discharge papers. The marriage certificate relates to a 1906 marriage to Florence Margaret NOVIS so it looks as if Alan must have married again later on.
July 2014: I've now found Alan's second marriage at familysearch.org's collection South Africa, Natal Province, Civil Marriages, 1845-1955. It took place in 1952 when Alan was 68.

      Details from army discharge cerificate:
Service number V465, rank sapper. Attested at Cape Town on 3 July 1918 for the 1st South African Infantry Brigade at age 35 for active service in Europe.
Discharged as a consequence of demobilistion. Allowable service 307 days. Conduct very good. Dischrged in December 1918.
