  Notes	1841 census: in Shooters Hill, Plumstead, Kent (all TUFFNELL), James (65, carpenter, not born in county), Eliza (69, not born in county) and James (20, born in county). 1851 census: in Shooters Hill, Plumstead, Kent (all TUFFNELL), James (head, married, 75, carpenter, late master, born Polwarden, Hertfordshire), Thomas (son, married, 30, master carpenter, born Plumstead, Kent), Joan* (son's wife, married, 30, born Brecon, Wales) and Thomas (grand son, 4(?) months, born Plumstead, Kent). * Joan was Joan DAVIES, who married Thomas TUFFNELL in 1847 and who is named on the birth certificates as the mother of Emily Alice TUFFNELL born in December 1847 and Thomas William TUFFNELL, born in November 1850. By the time of the next census, Joan and her two children had been replaced by Maria and her two children. I cannot find a marriage between Thomas and Maria. Joan, as Joan TUFFNELL, a widow of 65, born Brecon, Wales, appeared in the 1881 census with her daughter Emily A TUFFNELL, unmarried, 31, a teacher in a private school. Joan was living off income from dividends. They lived at 5 Millbrook Road, Brixton, London. Joan died in 1883. 1861 census: at 18 Upper Market Street, Hove, Sussex (all TUFFNELL), Thomas (head, married, 43, labourer, born Shooters Hill, Kent), Maria (wife, married, 43, labourers wife, born Durham), Elizabeth Ann (daughter, 4, scholar, born Plumstead, Kent) and Thomas (son, 3 months, born Upper Market Street, Hove). Maria died before the 1871 census. I've been unable to find Thomas in later censuses, or his death.
