  Notes	William was baptised as the son of Thomas (husbandman) and Edith WILKIE of Masham. The Proudfoot Family Tree at ancestry. com identifies this couple as Thomas Young WILKIE, 1790 - 1841 and his wife Edith nee GRAHAM, 1792 - 1825, who married in Masham on 29 November 1814. The tree does not give Thomas Young Wilkie's parents. As of May 2026, I haven't traced the Wilkie family any further back. 1841 census: possibly the William WILKEY (sic), a 20 year-old male servant, born in Yorkshire and living Market Place, Guisborough, Yorks. Apparently living with two other 20 year-olds, William HODGSON and Mary WOOD. When William married in 1841 his surname was recorded as WILKEY and he signed as such. This surname appeared in the birth registrations of some of William's children 1851 census: in Elvet, Durham (all WILKIE), William (head, widower, 33, coachman, born Masham, Yorkshire), Margaret (daughter, 8, scholar, born Guisbrough, Yorkshire), Thomas (son, 7, scholar, born Guisbrough, Yorkshire) and William (son, 2, scholar, born Durham, Durham). Also Margaret MUDD (unmarried, 27, housekeeper, born Masham, Yorkshire) and a visitor, William PEARSON (unmarried, 29, groom, born Rushford, Durham). 1861 census: at 3 Old Elvet, St Oswald, Durham (all WILKIE), William (head, 43, omnibus driver, born Masham, Yorkshire), Margaret (wife, 31, born Lumley, Durham), Thomas (son, 17, apprentice butcher, born Durham, Durham), William (son, 12, scholar, born Durham, Durham), Jane (daughter, 8, scholar, born Durham, Durham), James (son, 7, scholar, born Durham, Durham), Robert (son, 4, scholar, born Durham, Durham) and Joseph (son, 9 months, born Durham, Durham). 1871 census: at 57 Old Elvet, Elvet, Durham (all WILKIE), William (head, widower, 53, cab proprieter, born Masham, Yorkshire), Margaret A---- (daughter, unmarried, 28, housekeeper, born Guisbro, Yorks), William (son, 22, cabinet maker, born Durham), Jane E (daughter, 18, scholar, born Durham), Robert C (son, 14, pupil teacher, born Durham), Joseph H (son, 10, scholar, born Durham) and Edith (daughter, 8, scholar, born Durham).. 1881 census: at 57 Old Elvet, Durham (all WILKIE), William (head, widower, 63, cab proprieter, born Masham, Yorkshire), Margaret A (daughter, 38, dressmaker, born Guisbro, Yorks), Joseph Henry (son, 18, born Durham, Durham), Edith (daughter, 18, born Durham, Durham) and Mar Ann (granddaughter, 14, born Durham, Durham). Also Charles A W STAFFORD (grandson, 9, scholar, born Durham, Durham). 1891 census: at 1 Ellis Leazes, St Giles, Durham, William WILKIE widower, 73, cabman, born Masham, Yorkshire) was with his son-in-law Charles E STAFFORD (49) who was married to William's daughter Margaret A (48), and their son Charles A W STAFFORD. Also there was William's daughter Edith (single, 28) and Annie P STAFFORD, described as Charle E STaffor'd niece. William died in 1899.
