MINTER Henry of National Villa 12 Station-road Brightlingsea Essex retired oyster merchant died 20 December 1916 Probate Ipswich 7 April 1917 to Henry Edward Minter oyster merchant and Clara Eliza Went (wife of Arthur Alfred Went. Effects £8979 12s 11d.
From Stella Herbert, June 2009: On Dec. 2nd 1895 a Mr. Henry Minter was appointed deputy Mayor of Brightlingsea (from Essex Review). Confirmed in a list of Brightlingsea Deputies provided by James Earley, June 2009.
From James Earley, Jun 2009: a record at the SSBR website indicates that Henry owned the 'Golden Fleece', built 1903 at Frindsbury, a 50 ton spritsail registered at Southampton, no. 114572. [I found this record at http://www.merseamuseum.org.uk/mmbarges.php].
From James Earley, Jun 2009: a report from 1913 concerning an oyster stealing case heard at Colchester Borough Police Court mentions "Henry Minter, oyster merchant, treasurer and clerk to the Fishery Board, produced the lease from the corporation to the Board. "
Also from James Earley, Henry's obituary published in the Essex County Chronicle on 22 December 1916:
"Mr Henry Minter, oyster merchant, of Brightlingsea. died on Wednesday morning after a siezure on the previous day, aged 76 years. Mr Minter, who was well known and respected, was a widower, and leaves a son and a daughter. He had been clerk to the Colne Fishery, chairman of the Gas Co., a member of the Kent and Essex Sea Fisheries, Old Age Pensions and the Nursing Association Committee, and the Soldiers and Sailors' Committee. He was deputy mayor in 1895, an ex-Urban Councillor and an ex-Wesleyan Educational Committeeman."
