- First name unknown. According to the 1910 and 1920 US Federal Censuses, his wife Sophie immigrated into the USA in 1908*. She appeared in the 1910 census as a widow.
* the manifest of the SS Louis which left Southampton on 28 November and arrived at New York on 7 December 1908 includes a page "Record of Aliens held for special enquiry". On this page are entries for Sofia TORPANDJIAN, widow aged 40 and her sister Marian [must have been her daughter, known as Mary in the 1910 census], aged 10. Enquiries must have been completed quickly and satisfactorily because the couple were admitted at 2.15 on the day of arrival, 7th of December.
On the 1910 census, Sofia/Sophie is shown as having had 9 children of whom only 4 were living at the time of the census.
Given that Armenians were leaving Turkey in great numbers around the time Sofia got to America - the result of ethnic cleansing in Turkey - could Sofia's husband and some of her children have been killed before she made her escape?
