| Notes |
- Baptised the son of John, railway clerk, and Anne HODGE of Dawlish.
William appeared in the 1881 census, aged 23 a commercial clerk, living at 57 Waterloo Road, Paddington, London with his parents.
In the 1891 census, at 4 Great John Street, Manchester, 'visitors' with Minnis WHITE (head, married, 41, actress, born London) and her daughter, Annis WEBB (15, hose work, born Liverpool) were William J T ELWORTHY (married, 40, actor, born Dawlish, Devonshire) and Lillie ELWORTHY (married 23, actress, born East London).
"Lillie" was probably Elizabeth HAY's stage name. It doesn't appear that William and Lillie were married.
1901 census - at 9 Stamford Street, Stretford, Lancashire (all ELWORTHY), William T (head, 43, theatre manager, born Dawlish, Devon), Elizabeth A (wife, 34, born Bow, London), Wilfred L (son, 9, born Newcastle, Northumberland), Lillie (daughter, 8, born Newcastle, Northumberland) and Elsie (daughter, 2, born Croydon, Surrey).
It's clear that William was pursuing a career in the theatre as actor, manager and director. These are just a few of the many references that can be found on the web, under the name W T Elworthy:
- http://www.digitaltheatrearchive.com/archives/2471 acting in Belfast in 1895.
- https://www.biblio.com/book/babes-wood-pantomime-elworthy-wt/d/709125931: A poster of 29 January 1900 from the Theatre Royal, Rochdale, Lancashire has the name W T Elsworthy on it.
- https://theatricalia.com/play/2j0/little-lord-fauntleroy/production/5vx: W T Elworthy appeared in and directed a production of Little Lord Fauntleroy at Bristol in 1914 - 15.
William and Elizabeth must have split up before the 1911 census:
1911 census: at 6 Mornington Crescent, London NW (2 rooms) (both ELWORTHY), William Thomas (head, 53, married, actor in theatres, born Dawlish, Devonshire) and Beth (wife, 26, married 8 years*, no children, actress in theatres, born Manchester, Lancashire).
* marriage not found.
William's death registration was as William T J ELWORTHY.
