| Notes |
- 1901 census: at 4 Crowland Yard, Haverhill, Clara DOWNEY (head, married, 33, born Doncaster, Yorkshire), George DOWNEY* (12, born Nexborough [Mexborough], Yorkshire, Frederick DOWNEY (8, born Crowle, Lincs), Florence A DOWNEY (6, born Selby, Yorkshire), Clara M DOWNEY (3, born Haverhill, Suffolk) and Alfred E DOWNEY (6 months, born Haverhill, Suffolk).
* this was George Henry BALDING, Clara's son by her first husband - see her Notes.
Clara's husband has not been found.
Very close by (on the same census page) at 9 Crowland Road were James DOWNEY (41, bricklayers labourer, born Melford, Suffolk), Anna DOWNEY (43, born Diss, Norfolk), Richard J DOWNEY (17, hairweaver, born Melford, Suffolk), Willie J DOWNEY (13, manual water carrier (?), born Lincoln, Lincs), Annie DOWNEY (12, born Lincoln, Lincs), Ada DOWNEY (7, born Crowle, Lincs), Mabel DOWNEY (5, born Haverhill, Suffolk) and Alice M (1?, born Haverhill, Suffolk).
It seems highly likely that James DOWNEY was Clara DOWNEY's brother-in-law - see the Notes for James's supposed father, William DOWNEY for census notes. It seems likely that Clara's husband was James's younger brother Frederick DOWNEY. A possible chain of events is as follows:
1. James and Frederick were born and raised in Long Melford, Suffolk, which is about 12 miles from Haverhill.
2. James married, probably Annie Maria MURRAY in Q1 1882 in the Sudbury Registration District (which covers Long Melford). Their first child was born in Long Melford.
3. Some time between 1882 and 1888 (when James's second son was born), James moved to Crowle, Lincolnshire.
4. Frederick was still living in Long Melford with his widowed mother at the time of the 1891 census but probably married Clara Emma WESTERN (born Doncaster Q3 1868) in Q4 1891 in the Thorne Registration District, which covers Crowle, Lincs.
5. So by the end of 1891 both James and Frederick were probably living in Crowle, Lincs.
6. At some point in the 1890s both James and Frederick moved with their families to Haverhill and stayed there at least until the time of the 1901 census.
The above leaves two unanswered questions:
- where was Clara DOWNEY's husband when the 1901 census was taken? (He had reappeared by the 1911 census).
- why do we think that Clara's husband's name was Charles Frederick DOWNEY? The notes above suggest he was plain Frederick DOWNEY and when Clara was buried in Haverhill aged 44 on 20 April 1912 she was 'wife of Frederick'. If we have the right birth registration, the name was Charles Frederick. There was a burial in Haverhill on 16 February 1933 of Charles Frederick DOWNEY, age 68 and it's not clear whether or not this was Clara's husband. On balance, the name name was probably Charles Frederick, with 'Charles' not being used much of the time.
1911 census: at 9 Crowland Road, Haverhill, Suffolk (4 rooms), Frederick (head, 45, married, labourer, born Long Melford, Suffolk), Clara (wife, 43, married 20 years, 7 children all living, born Doncaster, Yorkshire), Frederick (son, 17, single, errand boy, born Crowle, Lincolnshire), Florence Agnes (daughter, 15, single, tailoress, born Selby, Yorkshire), Clara Mildred (daughter, 13, born Haverhill, Suffolk), Alfred Earnest (son, 10, born Haverhill, Suffolk), Annie Elizabeth (daughter, 7, born Haverhill, Suffolk), Harry James (son, 5, born Haverhill, Suffolk) and Arthur (son, 2, born Haverhill, Suffolk).
