Notes |
- 1861 census: no trace
1871 census: with parents.
1881 census: William, 20, was a labourer (passenger) on the 'Six Sisters', counted at Sheerness, Kent. The ship's port of registry and lodging were given as his birth place.
1891 census: with parents, unmarried.
1901 census: in Leinster Villas, Wakering Avenue, South Shoebury, Essex, William J (40, railway storekeeper, born Rhyl, N Wales), Eliza (40, born Dunton, Essex).
1911 census (supplied by Heather McVicar): at 53 Wakering Circle, Shoeburyness, Essex (6 rooms), William James (head, 51, married, railway storekeeper), Eliza (51, married 21 years, no children) and niece Evelyn DRAY (13, at school, born Shoeburyness).
Form signed W J Minter.
1939 Register: at 53 Wakering Avenue, Southend-on-Sea C.B., Essex
Minter, William born 2 Apr 1860, married, storekeeper
Minter, Eliza, born 26 Jan 1860, married, unpaid domestic duties
The marriage in 1889 to Eliza BRADD is thought to refer to this William James but it's odd that it took place in Thanet, Kent. It's also strange that William appears in the 1891 census with his parents, shown as 31 and single.
April 2010: email from Neville A Daniels:
"William Minter was known the Newman families of Sheerness, Kent, England and would stay in one of their guest houses.
He worked as a Shore Based Stoker at the Naval Ship yards there, as did his father Charles Minter from time to time.
Both stayed with various Newman's.
I will admit that William was a bit of a puzzle and hard to track.
Apparently he could not read or write and worked with two Newman brother's, one of whom was blind.
In 1881 he is listed on the motor vessel "Six Sisters" registered out of the port of Sheerness, Kent, England; with the port of registry and lodging given as his birth place. Incidently in the Orset District in which Thurrock lies.
They would have taken the ferry from Shoeburyness Barracks old pier, the remains of which are at the end of "Barge Pier Road" Shoeburyness to Sheerness Naval Base.
About Two Hours straight across the Thames."
Neville found and provided details of the 1881 census which are noted above.
