    Notes
    • 1861 census (indexed as HAMSTEAD and recorded as such), lodging at The Dial in Bradford Street, Bocking, Essex, Ebenezer HAMSTEAD (lodger, married, 26, mat maker, born Glemsford, Suffolk). Ebenezer's wife Sophia and two daughters were with Sarah DOWNEY, widow of William DOWNEY.

It seems that Ebenezer and Sophia's marriage didn't last and that they had separated by the time of the 1861 census. By the time of the 1871 census, Ebenezer (using the alias James) was living with his wife-to-be Mary Ann COBB:
1871 census: in Brewhouse Green, Roydon, Norfolk, James HEMPSTEAD (head, unmarried, 36, mat maker, born Glemsford, Suffolk), Mary Ann COBB (housekeeper, unmarried, 30, born Didd, Norfolk, Eliza J HEMPSTEAD (daughter, 12, scholar, born Melford, Suffolk), Sarah HEMPSTEAD (daughter, 10, scholar, born Melford, Suffolk), Emily COBB (daughter, 6, scholar, born Pulham, Norfolk), Alice COBB (daughter, 4, born Diss, Norfolk) and Caroline COBB (daughter, 2, born Roydon, Norfolk).

Ebenezer and Mary Ann got married in 1875. I haven't discovered what became of Sophia.

1881 census: in Diss, Norfolk (all HEMSTEAD (sic)), Ebenezer (head, 45, mat maker, born Glemsford, Suffolk), Mary Ann (wife, 40, born Diss, Norfolk), Alice (daughter, 14, mat factory worker, born Diss, Norfolk), Caroline (daughter, 12, brush factory worker, born Roydon, Norolk), Edward J (son, 9, scholar, born Roydon, Norfolk), Hannah (daughter, 7, scholar, born Diss, Norfolk) and William (son, 5, scholar, born Diss, Norfolk).

1891 census: in Bocking, Essex, Ebenezer HEMPSTEAD (head, widower, 55, mat maker, born Glemsford, Suffolk). Ebenezer was by himself and called himself a widower but it's clear from the following 1891 census entry that he wasn't really a widower:
in Shelfanger Road, Roydon, Norfolk, Mary A OSBORNE* (head, married, 49, mat binder, born Diss, Norfolk), James E H COBB (son, 20, mat maker, born Roydon, Norfolk) and Wm. HEMSTEAD (sic) (son, 15, loom assistant, born Diss, Norfolk).
      * I haven't found why Mary adopted the name OSBORNE and haven't found her or Ebenezer in later censuses.
