| Notes |
- The justification for assuming that Thomas was the son of Thomas and Elizabeth is as follows:
1. it would be quite usual for a first-born son to be given the father's name (but on the other hand there is the slightly awkward fact that another of Thomas and Elizabeth's sons was named Henry)
2. the baptismal record on the IGI shows that the parents of Thomas Henry Dickerson (sic) were Thomas Minter and Elizabeth (no surname given). The IGI says that Thomas was 1 when he was baptised.
3. both Thomas senior and Thomas Henry Dickenson were shipwrights.
1841 census (1): in Northfleet, Kent, Henry (30, shipwright, not born in Kent).
1841 census (2): at the Stowage, St Nicholas Deptford, Kent, (listed in the following order) John WARD (70, shipwright, not born Kent), Hannah PEARCE (30, bonnet maker(?), born Kent), Mary Ann MINTER (5, born Kent), James ----- (30, clk, born Kent), Cl--- ---- (4, not born Kent) and Mary Ann MINTER (30, born Kent).
1851 census: at 10 John Street, St Pauls Deptford, Kent, Thomas (41, shipwright, born Rotherhithe, Surrey), Mary Ann (39, born Deptford, Kent), Henry (nephew, 2, born Deptford, Kent).
1861 census: 19 John Street, St Pauls Deptford, Kent, Thomas (51, shipwright, born Surrey), Mary Ann (50, born Deptford, Kent), Henry (son, 12, born Greenwich, Kent) and James NICHOL (grandson, 3, born Deptford, Kent).
1871 census: at Garden Cottage, St Pauls Deptford, Kent, Thomas (61, shipwright, self-employed, born Rotherhithe, Surrey), Mary Ann (60, wife, born Deptford, Kent), Mary Ann NICOLS (daughter, married, 35, born Deptford, Kent), Henry (son, 23, shipwright, self employed, born Greenwich, Kent), James NICHOLS (grandson, 13, scholar, born Deptford, Kent), Mary Ann NICHOLS (granddaughter, 11, scholar, born Deptford, Kent), Elizabeth NICHOLS (granddaughter, 7, scholar, born Deptford, Kent) and Amelia NICOLS (granddaughter, 1, born Deptford, Kent).
The exact status of Henry isn't known: he was described as nephew in 1851 and son in 1861 and 1871***. No trace of him has been found after 1871 except his probable death in 1913.
***September 2008: this question has been resolved by acquring Henry's birth certificate which shows that his parents were David Minter and Catherine Minter nee Wright. David Minter was Thomas Henry Dickenson Minter's brother so Henry was correctly described as 'nephew' in 1851. Why he should have been brought up by his uncle is a mystery.
1881 and 1891 censuses: not found.
1911 census: see Henry Robert Minter's Notes for his 1911 census details.
