  Notes	1841 census: in Cuckfield, Sussex, John (25, carpenter) was with his father Stephen (65, carpenter), mother Mary (60) and brothers Richard (20, carpenter) and James (15, carpenter). All were born in Sussex. It seems likely that John married in Q4 1843, registered in Ticehurst (7/799), which covers Wadhurst where his wife Alice was born. Alice's surname does not however appear on FreeBMD so remains unknown. 1851 census: at 15 High Street, St Clement, Hastings, Sussex, John (35, carpenter, born Cuckfield, Sussex), Alice (28, carpenter's wife, born Wadhurst, Sussex), Caroline (6, scholar, born Wadhurst, Sussex), Anne (5, scholar, born Wadhurst, Sussex) and Elizabeth (1, born Wadhurst, Sussex). 1861 census: in Hamburg Place, Lewisham, Kent, John (45, builder, born Cuckfield, Sussex), Ann (sic) (39, builder's wife, born Mayfield, Sussex), Caroline (16, born Wadhurst, Sussex), Anne (15, born Frant (?), Sussex), Elizabeth (11, scholar, born Wadhurst, Sussex), John (8, scholar, born Hastings, Sussex) and Thomas (5, scholar, born Hastings, Sussex). 1871 census: at 1 Smiths Cottages, Croydon, Surrey, John (54, carpenter, born Cuckfield, Sussex), Alice (49, born Wadhurst, Sussex), John (19, carpenter, born Hastings, Sussex), Thomas (15, carpenter, born Hastings, Sussex) and Jessie (10, scholar, born Sydenham, Kent). From the above it can be seen that by 1871 the Knight family had moved to Croydon. It's clear that daughters Anne and Elizabeth married George Minter and Robert William Minter respectively; George and Robert Wiiliam were brothers and both were living in or near Croydon at this time.
