      US Air Force SSGT Fred William Smith, Korean War Veteran, Vietnam Veteran, Native of Moorseville, NC.

      US Air Force Staff Sergeant Fred Winston Smith was a casualty of the Vietnam War. As a member of the Air Force, SSGT Smith served our country until September 1st, 1969 in Bing Thuy, South Vietnam. He was 38 years old and was married. Fred died when his plane crashed. His body was recovered. Fred was born on January 6th, 1931 in Mooresville, NC. SSGT Smith is on panel 18W, line 021 of the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington D.C. He served our country for 21 years.

      OBITUARY: AIRMAN DIES IN VIETNAM. MOORESVILLE - SSGT Fred Winston Smith, a Mooresville native, was killed in action in Vietnam Septermber 1. He was 36 years old and had served in the US Air Force for 21 years. He was serving his second tour of duty in Vietnam. He was the son of W M Smith of Richland, SC., and the late Mrs Smith. His wife, the former Jacqueline Minter, daughter of Mr and Mrs J W Minter of Mooresville, resides in Orlanda, Florida. Smith was a crew member on board an AC-47 aircraft that crashed into a mountain while on an operational mission. In addition to his wife and father he is survived by three children. Desie, Jerry and Danny Smith, all of the home, four brothers, William Aldean, and Donald Smith, both of Statesville, Billy Lee Smith of Thomasville and Bobby R Smith of Moorseville, three sisters, Mrs N J Warren and Mrs Donald W Brown, both of Moorseville, and Mrs Marvin Morrison of Seneca, SC. Funeral arrangements are incomplete.

      He is the Son of Mr and Mrs W M Smith of Moorseville, North Carolina. The Husband of Mrs Jacqueline Minter Smith, Father to Desie, Jerry and Danny Smith.

      He served with the 4th Special Operations Squadron, "Ghostriders", 14th Special Operations Wing, 7th Air Force, Vietnam.

      He was awarded The Purple Heart Medal for his combat related wounds, The Air Force Commendation Medal, The Vietnam Service Medal, The Republic of Vietnam Campaign Service Medal, The Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, The Korean Defense Medal, The United Nations Service Medal, The Korean Service Medal, The National Defense Service Medal, The Air Medal with Multiple Oak Leaf Clusters.
