    Notes
    • In 1861 he was a private in the army, age given as 19, based at Colchester, Essex. In 1871 the entry for William WINTER, aged 24, a private in the Dragoon Guards based in Leeds might refer.

In 1881, at 4 Park View, Sculcoates, Yorkshire, living with Jesse Fletcher, his wife and son, was a William FLETCHER, 35, lodger, labourer, born Norwich. It's thought this is probably an enumerator's error and relates to William Minter, since a few doors away, at 7 Park View lived William's future wife Mary PEACOCK (23, widow, laundress) and her daughter Edith (4).

1891 census: at 9 Queen Square, Sculcoates, Kingston upon Hull, Yorkshire, William (48, railway porter, born Norwich), Mary (33), Edith (14) [Mary's daughter from her first marriage], William S C (9, scholar), Frederick T (7, scholar), Henry S (4) and Irene E (1).

1901 census: by the time the 1901 census was taken, William had remarried following the death of his first wife, and had himself died. His widow Marian (50, place of birth 'NK') together with Stanley (19), Fred (17) and Harry (14), all labourers in a colour works, were living at 46 Norwood Street, Holy Trinity, Kingston upon Hull, Yorkshire. Edith's whereabouts are not known; Irene Ellatha, said to be an orphan, aged 12 was at a school in Holy Trinity, Myton, Yorkshire.

The identity of William's second wife is a bit of a mystery. Her name is given in 1901 as Marian yet FreeBMD, for Q4 1893 Sculcoates 9d/387, gives Alice ALDERSON or Catherine SHEA.
February 2025: I think the above "mystery" is solved - I found a 1911 census page which includes the following at 53 Greek Street, Hull. It is all very badly written:
Maryline Alice Minter, head, 58, widow, married 18 years [crossed out], industry to which connected 'lodgers', born London. Also 3 lodgers, all young single men. There's also an entry, which has been crossed out, for Lelyern(?) Scott, daughter, 40, married. The form was signed, in a different hand, by Marion Alice Minter.

    • The IGI record gives the names as Elitha Curtis and Robert CONEY - probably a mis-transcription of Cossey.

February 2016: Linda Ferguson, Alithea Curtis's gt gt gt granddaughter, has a copy of the Rackheath, Norfolk parish register in which the marriage is recorded. The details are:
Robert Cossey of this parish single man and Elitha Curtis of this parish single woman were married in this church by banns with consent of [blank] this twenty third day of March in the year one thousand eight hundred and thirty four. Both parties marked, as did the witnesses Edward Stone (who witnessed other marriages around this time) and William Waters.
