Notes |
- Dewey was born in Colin County, Texas on March 31, 1898.He grew up in the Simms, Texas area. Dewey joined the US Navy April 17, 1917 shortly after his 19th birthday He served as a fireman on the Gunboat USS Paducah (GM-18). He was discharged after one year and ten months of service Feburary 25, 1919. He joined the Navy again on a two year enlistment December 22, 1920. During this enlistment he server one and a half years on the Minesweeper USS Heron (AM-10) and six months on the Destroyer, USS Broome (DD-210). He received an honorable discharge on December 21, 1922 with a rating of Fireman First Class. After leaving the service, he moved to Plainview in West Texas and worked as lineman for Texas Utilities and as a fireman for the city of Plainview. He moved back to Simms in 1935 after the death of his second wife and worked as a merchant seaman, farmer, baker, and boiler tender on a dredge boat on the Mississippi. In 1943 he became a fireman for the Red River Army Depot Fire Department and remained there until his retirement in 1963. He died in Feb. 1970 from complications of a bad heart and bleeding ulcers.
One story his siblings used to tell was that when Dewey was a small boy he came running into the house one day and told his mother "Mama, I done went and crawled under the house and found a nest with 5 eggens in it and the ole hen didn't went and peck me nether."
Another funny story occured when my younger brother Milton was playing high school football. I, (W D JR.), attended a game once when Milton was knocked unconscious. Dad went out on the field to check on him. In a few minutes they asked for a doctor over the PA system and I went out to see if he was badly hurt. I was wearing a coat and tie and as I approached dad was bending over Milton saying "come on son, don't keep us in expense, say something". One of the coaches assuming that I was a doctor said "Mr. Minter please get back and give the doctor room". Dad looked up at me and said "Hell, he ain't no doctor thats another one of my boys".
Died of heart failure during treatment for a bleeding ulcer.
