| Notes |
- 1871 census: aged 15, John was a grocer and cheesemonger's assistant at 'Broadway House', 10 Broadway, West Ham.
No trace after that.
It's possible that no trace of John Robinson Minter has been found after 1871 because he was the 'John R Minter' who was on the 'Avalanche' which sank on 11 September 1877 off Portland, Dorset after colliding with the 'Forest'. The Avalanche had not long left London en route for Wellington, New Zealand. Also among the 63 passengers was a 'John Minter' whose identity is unknown. Both Minters drowned along with more than 100 other people.
A very detailed account of the disaster appeared in the NZ Bay of Plenty Times on 10 November 1877 and can be read at http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast?a=d&cl=search&d=BOPT18771110.2.13&srpos=531&e=-------100--451----0minter-all
It remains to be seen whether the above can be proved. It's worth noting that in some accounts of the disaster the name John R Winter (rather than Minter) appears.
The above is now proved: England & Wales, National Probate Calendar (Index of Wills and Administrations),1861-1941 (at Ancestry.co.uk, Nov 2010) has:
8 February 1878 Personal Estate under £450. Administration of the Personal Estate of John Robinson Minter late of 194 Ol-Kent-road in the County of Surrey Shopman a Bachelor who died 11 September 1877 at Sea was granted at the Principal Registry to David Minter of 28 Colls-road Peckham in the said County Gentleman the Father and Next of Kin.
