Mary Patricia "Pat" Thomason Minter, 84, of Cleveland, TN, died on Monday, December 22, 2014, in her home surrounded by her family.
She grew up on a farm in Toccoa, GA. After graduating from Stephens County High School, she attended and graduated at age 19 from Piedmont College in Demorest, GA, where she met her love for a lifetime, Gerald H. Minter. They began life as teachers. She continued teaching junior high, high school and college for the duration of her life. He accepted his call into the ministry and they also began pastoring churches together in Georgia and Tennessee. She was a science teacher and pastor's wife for 49 years at his side.
She completed her master of education degree at the University of Tennessee in Chattanooga while teaching at Tomlinson College where she taught off and on from 1968 until it closed in 1992. After retirement, she continued to teach biology labs at Lee University and was a substitute teacher for county and city schools. In addition to teaching in schools, she served a number of years on the local Teen Challenge Board and taught inmates in Bradley County justice system how to improve their lives through healthy choices; she taught various life enrichment subjects in state Family and Marriage Retreats and youth camps for the Church of God of Prophecy, and last and dear to her heart, she taught Life Strategies Sunday School class at Peerless Road Church for 30 years alongside her best friend, Jackie Moore.
She was preceded in death by husband, Gerald H. Minter; and daughter, Karen Celeste Minter.
She is survived by her children & grandchildren, Teresa Minter Shull with husband, Don of Cleveland, Nathan and daughter-in-law Beth of Murfreesboro, Keith A. Minter of Cleveland, Eric M. Minter with wife, Linda and Dr. Jamey Garner and wife Lana Seibel of Lawrence, KS; her siblings, Malone Thomason with wife, Betty of Spindale, NC, Perry Thomason of Columbia, SC and Mark Thomason with wife Fredda of Toccoa, GA; her dear friends; and hundreds of students whose lives have been impacted by her teaching.
The Remembrance of Life Service will be conducted Wednesday, December 24, at 12 p.m. from the Peerless Road Church of God of Prophecy with Pastor Brian Sutton and Pastor Eric Minter officiating. Graveside Service and Interment will follow at 2:30 p.m. in the U. S. National Cemetery in Chattanooga.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to the new Children's Wing for the Peerless Road Church, 3301 Peerless Road, Cleveland, Tennessee 37312.
The North Ocoee Chapel of the Jim Rush Funeral Homes has charge of the arrangements.
