- at 31 December 1881 on the staff list for the London Brighton and South Coast Railway Company, Marine Department, Newhaven Station as a boiler maker's apprentice, aged 17, wages 8s per week or 1s 4d per day.
1891 census: at 1 Armstrong Street, Plumstead, London, Edward (25, boiler maker), Minnie (25) and Samuel (2).
1901 census: at 1 Thomas Street, Plumstead, Edward (widower, 36, boiler maker), Samuel (12), Edmund [should probably have been Edward] (9) and John (7).
