[As a matter of interest only: The Chetwynd-Stapylton I found in the 1939 Register must have been Frederick Chetwynd-Stapylton. I've found him and his wife Maud in the 1911 census, at which time they lived in a 19 roomed house called Englefield Lodge at Englefield Green. Frederick was a stockbroker and must have been pretty wealthy - they had 7 maids and a footman. His estate when he died in 1942 (then living at Hatton Hill) was valued at £27,096.]
From Nick Blake, July 2017:
"Win Whitehouse was a close friend of my mum and was "aunty win" to me. I think she died in 1966 and I was at her funeral. I fondly remember her and her employer Denys Blewett."
"I went to Boxted church very recently and tried to find Win's grave....we found several Whitehouses but not her. Just inside the gate of the new part are Dick and Madge Whitehouse. Dick was Len's brother. Strangely their son in law John Godfrey is buried in their grave.
We used to visit Len and Annie sometimes when we went to see Win at Boxted Hall. Mum was very fond of them. I see Win was a witness at their wedding.
My mother met Win when they both lived in Windlesham Surrey in the 1920's. Win entertained my mum who was 18 years younger. Win was "in service" as they called it and never had children. Did she lose anyone in WW1?
There was never any discussion about any partners she may have had. Often women stayed in service and never married. She adored her nieces and great nieces and treated me like one of them.
She died in Boxted or in a local hospital as far as I can recall in 1965...I know it was before my dad died in 1966. It is noted that Len died in 1967 but I don't remember that.
Win's funeral was in Boxted and I remember being very honoured that Denys Blewett , her employer, asked me to take her arm as she was quite upset.
Denys was widowed so the two women lived in that very large house. I went back there a few years ago and it is still in the same family.
I have lovely memories of staying at Boxted Hall with Win when my parents had a rare weekend away. Just been listening and looking at the Bedford OB coaches with their famous gearbox/diff whine. They were the coaches operated by Wents that took me to Boxted. I remember that sound especially on the hills after leaving Straight Road."
August 2017: Nick Blake has sent me a photo of Win showing her carrying Nick as a baby. The photo is on the Minter Exchange website.
Although Nick Blake isn't related to the 'Minters of Great Horkesley', some information about his family has been discovered and is recorded here.
Nick Blake is Nicholas J Blake: his birth was registered at Colchester in Q4 1946 (4a/833). His parents were Richard J Blake (born about 1899, death at age 67 registered at Cochester in Q2 1966 (4a/589) and Ellen E Thatcher. Richard and Ellen's marriage was registered at Surrey NW in Q4 1944 (2a/795).
