  Notes	James's birth was probably registered in Q3 1842 at Kensington as James HAYES. The expanded birth index doesn't show a mother's maiden name. 1861 census: James a private in the army, at Colchester, Essex. James and Maria had a son baptised in Dublin in 1869 - probably explains why I can't find him in the 1871 census - he was serving in Ireland. This son, James Nugent Minter, died within 3 months and was buried at the Arbour Hill Barracks in Dublin 1871 census: probably in India. When sons Alfred George, Frederick Henry and Arthur Albert were baptised James was a colour sergeant in the 56th Regiment In 1888 James must have been serving in Ireland - his son Arthur Albert started school there at age 11 years 11 months, 1881 census: Serving in the 56th Regiment, based at North Camp, Aldershot, James (38, sergeant major), Marie (31), Marie E (13), Teresa J (9), Alfred G (7), Arthur A (6), Frederick H (5) and Charles H (5 months). Teresa, Alfred and Arthur were born in India so James may have been serving overseas at the time of the 1871 census. John J Minter has found a record at findmypast.com's Chelsea Pensioner collection which appears to refer to James: ROBERT MINTER born c1858 Petersfield, Hants. Attested aged 22, on the 19th January, 1880 40th Brigade. WO97/3476/76. John subsequently added: James Minter - born 1842, Kensington, London; who joined the 56th Foot in 1860. Just by chance I found his medals for sale on the net! He attested in 1860 - then-- Corporal 1866 Sergeant, 1867 Colour Sergeant, Dec. 1870 Sergeant Major, Feb., 1879 Discharged, 12th January, 1886. From the 2nd Battalion, The Essex Regiment. Died about 1922 He was awarded - Egypt and Sudan Medal 1882-1889 (Clasp: THE NILE) Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal (with gratuity of £5, 1879) Meritorious Service Medal (with Annuity of £10, from the 8th of December, 1912) Khedive's Star 1884-1886 1891 census: at the Britannia Public House, Carisbrooke, Isle of Wight, James (48, inn keeper & pensioner), Maria (38), Maria E GROVES (married, 23), Louisa I SHINGLER (19, soldier's wife) [ evidently Teresa J as was] and her daughter Florence G SHINGLER (1 month) and Charles H (10, scholar). 1901 census: at 167 Beecham Road, St Mary, Reading, Berkshire, James (58, retired sergeant major) and Maria (48). 1911 census: at 161 Regina Road, Southall, Middlesex (5 rooms), James (head, 68, married, Army pensioner, retired Warrant Officer, born Kensington, London) and Maria (wife, 58, married 44 years, 11 children, 3 living 8 died, born Cork, Ireland). Form signed James Minter James died before the next census: 1921 census: at 1, Williams Road, Bosham, Sussex, Maria Holmes MINTER (head, 69y 1m, widow, born County Cork, Iremand, home duties), Maria Elizabeth GROVES (visitor, 53y 2m, married, born County Waterford, Ireland, home duties) and Mary Louisa MINTER (daughter in law, 29, married, born Fakenham, Suffolk, home duties). England & Wales, National Probate Calendar (Index of Wills and Administrations),1861-1941 (at Ancestry.co.uk, Nov 2010): MINTER James of 1 Williams-road Bosham Sussex died 8 June 1921 Administration (with Will) London 21 June 1921 to Maria Holmes Minter widow. Effects £260 8s 5d.
