    Notes
    • Lorenzo Dow Minter, son of Richard and Nancy Ragland Minter, was
probably born in Chatham County N.C.; the date is not known but it was
certainly before 1818, and most likely was between 1812 and 1814. There is
tradition with his descendants that he died in 1866, (there is no written
record of this date either), and that he was 56 years old at the times of
his death. This would make 1810 his birth year but it can hardly be right
for we have positive knowledge that his parents were not married until January
1811, and we are quite sure that Lorenzo was not the oldest child; evidence is
strong that William occupied that place. We are quite sure that Lorenzo Dow
and Anthony were 2nd and 3rd but since we have no accurate knowledge of their
birth dates, have never been able to decide which might be the older. Likely
it was Lorenzo. Not too much is known of him; he probably was living in Jasper
County Ga. at the time of his father"s death in 1837 for he was made
guardian of his infant brother Richard Henry, and continued to act in that
capacity until 1841. On Jan 26, 1841 he married Amanda Day of
Milledgeville and he possibly lived in Milledgeville for the next twenty years
or so. We were told, many years ago, by Mr. J. A. Minter of Tyler Ala that
Lorenzo edited a newspaper in Milledgeville during the War, (Mr. Minter did not
supply us with the source of his information), and there is evidence that he was
connected with other newspapers, (see obituary notice on a following page).
A tradition with his descendants is that he at one time had a business in Rome Ga.
and that a brother ran a newspapers in Columbus but that tradition likely was
confused the brother Anthony with Lorenzo - more probably Lorenzo ran the
newspaper in Columbus for we know that Anthony had a mercantile
business in Rome - indeed the obituary strongly suggests that he had been
connected with a newspaper there. The obituary also tells that he,
(Lorenzo), was living in Harris County Ga. at the time of his death; we
had the information from Miss Odom many years ago that Lorenzo was living
in Chipley at the time, in a house on ground now occupied by the railroad
station. As mentioned above the traditional date of his death is 1866 but
we do not know where he is buried. After his death, the widow, Amanda,
moved with her smaller children to Waverly, Ala to be near the daughter
Carrie who had married and settled there. Date of Amanda's death is not
known but she is buried in Waverly on the same lot as her daughter. A
picture of Lorenzo is still in the possession of Alabama descendants. It
is evidently as enlargement of the type common many years ago, done, from
small pictures, by itinerant artists for framing. It shows head and
shoulders only, of a youngish man , thin faced, with a lot of hair worn
rather long, mustache, and short chin whiskers.

      * Material on Lorenzo Dow Minter was gathered in part by Kathryn Minter
Hearn, Camp Hill Ala and completed by Mrs. Clifton F. Minter of Waverly
      Ala.

      *************************************
The following is copied from a clipping pasted inside the cover of an old
book owned by descendants of Lorenzo Dow Minter.

Death of L. D. Minter - We were pained to learn yesterday that Mr. L. D.
Minter of Harris County was lying at the point of death and would not
probably live an hour. His disease, we suppose, was congestive chill. Mr.
Minter was formerly the foreman of this office and was well known to most
of our citizens. He was a man of sterling uprightness and integrity and
was a useful member of the community in which he lived. Without
ostentation, he was a man of much intelligence and good judgement, a
valuable and esteemed citizen, and exemplary in all his private relations.
He leaves a widow and several children to mourn their great loss.

Pasted just below the above clipping is another, a long mournful poem of
the type usually accompanying death notices in the older days. It is
separate from the obituary notice and is in a smaller type. It carries
date line - Columbus GA, Sept. 9, 1866. It is assumed the poem is meant to
be a part of the death notice and if
so establishes the date of Lorenzo Dow Minter's death.

      August 8th, 1960
      Dear Mrs Minter,

Found this in old record book. Hope it will be some
      help.

      Sincerely,

      Mrs Otis E. White

      * I believe this to be correct. I have hand written family record stating
      L. D. Minter died August 16, 1866 at 2:00 o'clock. However, it goes on to
state that he was buried at Clowers Chapel a mile east of town.

The poem just below the death notice was dated Sept. 9, 1866. This date is
less than a month after the hand written family record. The date 1865
would be more than one year earlier and is likely incorrect.

Clifton Minter Jr. made a search, June 26, 1995, in the Harris Co. Court
House, Hamilton, Ga. and did locate several documents relating to Lorenzo
Dow and Amanda G. Minter. I am certain of the following
Lorenzo Dow Minter (L.D.) died intestate. Amanda G.
Minter filed an appraisment of the goods and chattels of L. D. Minter and
later sold some of these items. W. J. Saxon (son-in-law) Caroline,s
husband purchased some of these items from Amanda. One of the listed items
was a "Lot of Books" which some remain in the posession of his direct
descendants consisting of the cover of the Bible which contained his death
notice and at least two volumes of same Bible. This Bible had several
volumes. Apparently these were part of the "Lot of Books".

Lorenzo Dow owned land in several Counties in Georgia. He had land in
Paulding, Floyd, Sumter and Appling Counties. It was interesting that
Floyd Co. is the county containing Rome, Ga. This was mentioned in earlier
accounts from various relatives that Lorenzo Dow ran a newspaper in Rome
and brother Anthony did likewise in Columbus. However, my research leads
me to believe quite the opposite. The details will follow.

Clifton Jr. also visited the Cemetery, at the site of Clowers Chirch (no
longer in existance), and did not locate his grave. I believe that he was
most likely buried in the North East portion since it appeared to be the
oldest section. There were two great Oak trees in this area one standing
and the other broken and burned to a ten to twelve foot stump. I will try
to locate the plat of the cemetary. Apparenty there is one in existance
since a sign with the name Clowers Cemitary, for burial reqest contact
      Cataula Methodist Church.

Clifton Jr. went to the Columbus, Ga. Libray and retrieved microfilm of the
Daily Columbus Enquirer. It indicated on the box that contained the film
that there were missing issues form August 21, 1866 to August 30, 1866. My
hopes were somewhat deminished at this observation since Lorenzo's death
was most likely August 16, 1866. I searched the obituaries from August
16th to the 21st and found nothing. However did notice that a particular
scroll pattern that seperated the news items under LOCAL NEWS ITEMS. This
particular scroll pattern was at the top of the newspaper clipping that was
pasted to the inside cover of the Bible. I went back to the August 16th
issue and worked forward checking the LOCAL NEWS ITEMS column. On the
August 17th issue about the fourth item down the column there it was the
same article that was in the Bible.

This confirms that Lorenzo in fact had work at the DAILY COLUMBUS ENQUIRER,
"formerly of this office". It also confirms the date of his death as
August 16, 1866, not 1865 as some accounts had indicated.

Lorenzo Dow died at Cataula (Harris County Ga.) Aug 16th at
two o'clock 1866. He was buried at Clowers Chapel, a mile east of town.
