Notes |
- The following was provided by Judith Kinnear in January 2007.
George Herbert's birth was attended by a doctor, Dr Boyd, and a nurse, Annie Bennett. This birth
was registered by the mother on 24 June 1867.
As an 8-year-old, George Herbert was admitted to Gravel Street School in Sandhurst.
George Herbert, aged 13, died accidentally in McIvor Road at about 5 o'clock on 21 November, 1880, as a result of an accidental kick by a horse that impacted on his chest over his heart (d#11261). A coronial inquest was held into George Herbert's death on 23 November 1880 at the Royal Oak Hotel, Back Creek, Sandhurst.
Two boys, 13-year-old George Herbert and 14-year old William Riley (the brother of Mary Ann nee Riley who was then married to James Minter II, the oldest surviving brother of George Herbert) had gone to fetch a horse belonging to George 's father from a paddock on the McIvor Road. The accident occurred near the Travellers Rest Hotel, and afterwards, the boy's body was taken to the parents' home in Sheepwash Road.
In his statement to the coroner, William described what happened to George Herbert:
'I got on to the horse's back without a saddle, bridle or halter of any kind and the deceased seized him by the tail. The horse commenced to trot and I was afraid to ride him and got off. We came a little further on and both of us took hold of the horse's tail when the animal kicked out and struck the deceased on the chest. He fell on his back - he got up and placed his hands on his chest and ran towards me crying "Oh Lee! Lee!" (which is my nickname). He then fell again. In two or three minutes, Mr Craike came up with a buggy and the deceased immediately expired. I have known the horse for some time. He is a very quiet animal and I have ridden him before'.
A report of this accident appeared in the Bendigo Advertiser of 23 Nov 1880 as follows:
THE FATAL ACCIDENT ON THE McIVOR ROAD.
- An inquest was held last evening by Mr. Strickland at the Royal Oak Hotel, Back Creek, upon the body of the lad George Herbert Minter, who was killed on Sunday evening on the McIvor Road through being kicked by a horse. The particulars elicited were precisely similar to those published yesterday. The
horse, which was supposed to be a very quiet one, kicked out when the deceased and another boy caught it by the tail. The jury returned a verdict of accidental death.
