Notes |
- Between 1851 and 1861 it seems that Francis Groom went to Jamaica [more to come on this?]. It also seems that Francis' brother Henry adopted the name Francis as his second name - if not it means that the information recorded in his Notes is incorrect.
Francis was however in England at the time of the 1871 census, staying with his brother Charles in Snape. He was recorded as a widower, aged 34, a master mariner, born Snape. Various internet searches reveal that Francis must have been married to Frances COOPER. Her death at age 29 occurred in Q1 1871 in the Plomesgate district (4a/461) and is recorded elsewher as occuring on 31 January 1871, "the 3rd daughter of James COOPER of Hazlewood Hall". It is also noted that Francis and Frances' infant daughter died the following day. She was Jessie, whose death was registered at Plomesgate RD in Q1 1871 (4a/696). Another website indicates that Frances and Jessie, age 10 days, were buried at Framlingham.
In 1851 Hazlewood Hall, Friston, Suffolk was the home of James COOPER (44, a farmer), his wife Emma (48) and 6 children including Frances (9), the 3rd daughter. The only trace I've been able to find of the family after the 1851 census is the death of one of the sons, Henry Flatt COOPER, who was buried at Framlingham at age 26.
Did the COOPER family go to Jamaica? Did Frances and Francis marry there?
