| Notes |
- Up to the census of 1851, Henry was either at school or with his parents. It's thought that his brother Francis went to Jamaica some time in the 1850s: possibly as a result of this, Henry appears to have adopted the name Francis as his middle name. If not, the following information about him, and records of his wife & family may be wrong. This seems unlikely however, given that (1) Harriet Groom was staying with Henry (Francis) in 1861, as shown below and (2) that when he married in 1859, Henry (Francis) gave his father as Charles Groom, farmer and one of the witnesses was Margaret Groom, probably Henry's sister.
1861 census: in High Street, Manningtree, Essex, Henry Francis (34, grocer & draper, born Snape, Suffolk), Anne (34, born Helmdon, Northants), Helen SMITH (niece, 14, apprentice, born London) and Harriet GROOM (visitor, 24, born Snape).
1871 census: in High Street, Manningtree, Essex, Henry Francis (43, draper & grocer , born Snape, Suffolk), Anne (43, born Welmdon (sic), Northants), Anne SMITH (niece, 20, assistant, born London) and Harriet GROOM (visitor, 24, born Snape). Also Frederick SMITH (16, assistant, born London), listed only as an assistant, not a nephew as in 1881.
1881 census: in High Street, Manningtree, Essex, Anne (widow, 55, draper & grocer, born Helmdon, Northants), Anne M SMITH (niece, 28, assistant, born London) and Frederick SMITH (nephew, 26, assistant, born London).
The SMITH children mentioned above were probably children of William and Elizabeth SMITH, both of whom were born in Northamptoshire, Elizabeth in Helmdon so probably Anne's sister (an Elizabeth Ann Bayliss married a William Smith in Q1 1846 in the Brackley RD which covers Helmdon).
