Notes |
- 9 January 2007: Until today, the family of Robert Minter has been treated as separate from the Fritton group and was on the Minter website under Stockton, Norfolk. However, despite an anomaly concerning Robert's birthplace (see below), it seems more or less certain that he was the son of William and Meditation. The evidence for this comes from Robert's 1844 marriage certificate which gives his father's name as William, a labourer, and shows that one of the witnesses was Meditation Minter.
The anomaly concerning Robert's birthplace is that in 1851 he was said to have been born in 'Norfolk Long Stratton' (which is consistent with the baptism of his younger brothers and sister at Stratton St Michael). But in later censuses Robert's birthplace was shown as 'Stockton Norfolk', which is not very close to Long Stratton. However, the presence of Robert's wife Ann on the 1851, 1861 and 1871 censuses with ages 39, 49 and 59 and a birthplace consistently of 'St Peters Suffolk' is sufficient to suggest that Robert must have either forgotten where he was born or decided to say it was Stockton in later years.
May 2009: a record of Robert's baptism at FreeGEN confirms his parents as William Minter and Meditation (Browne). He was baptised at Stockton.
1851 census: in Upper Caistor, Norfolk, Robert (36, ag. lab.), Ann (39, school governess), Elener (sic) (17, general servant) and Christianna, Charity and Emily (all 13, scholars at home). Although the 4 girls were listed as Minters, they were Ann's children from her previous marriage.
1861 census: in Upper Caistor, Caistor St Edmunds, Norfolk, Robert (47, ag. lab.), Ann (49) and Harriet (granddaughter, 9, born Swainsthorpe, Norfolk).
1871 census: in Upper Caistor, Caistor St Edmunds, Norfolk, Robert (56, farm laborer), Ann (59) and Harriet (now described as daughter, 19, tailoress, born Swainsthorpe, Norfolk).
Harriet of 1861 and 1871 was almost certainly the illegitimate daughter of Robert's step-daughter Harriet FISHER - see her Notes.
1881 census: in Ice House lane, Norwich, Robert (67, blacksmith labourer) and Angelina (69).
1891 census: at 3 Ice House lane, Norwich, Robert (76, labourer) and Ann (79). Both died before the 1901 census.
